Devils Drop Non-Conference Matchup to Dutchmen

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team tried to pick up their second-straight non-conference win on Wednesday night when they made the short trip over Lebanon Valley College. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they gave a strong showing, but dropped a 3-1 decision to host Dutchmen at Sorrentino Gymnasium.

Things could not have begun much better for the Devils as five LVC errors and kills by Alexa Barowski, Amelia Kim, Ann Marie Patterson and Mathilde Verbitsky gave the guests a 9-3 lead. A 7-1 response for the home side knotting the score at 10-10. Points by Emma Popham and Eliette Whittaker kept things knotted 14-14, before a kill from Jessica Currie was the only DC score during an 8-2 charge for LVC making it 22-16. The teams shared the ensuing six points, but it would not be enough to bring the Devils back as a kill by Taylor McInerney capped a 25-19 win.

Lewis, Patterson, Popham and Verbitsky helped to keep DC close early in the second as they trailed by a slim 8-7 margin. Iona Nelson made her way onto the scoresheet along with Barowski, Kim and Popham over the following ten points to leave LVC in front 14-13. Unfortunately, after that the Dutchmen took control as Kim, Popham and Whittaker pounded down the only kills for DC during a 12-3 outburst for the home side to grab the second 25-17.

Three LVC miscues and points earned by Avery Lewis, Barowski and Kim had DC doubling up the hosts 6-3 early in the third. Two kills each by Popham and Verbitsky aided by a solo for Kim along with a solo block from Dessie Anne Nietert extended the margin by one to 14-10. Mattea Penner, Teaguen Reynolds and McInerney led a 6-2 LVC run to draw level at 16-16. Two scores by Kim and a kill notched by Nietert helped the Devils to claim six of the next nine points to make it 22-19. The teams then went "back and forth" over the next six points with Currie pushing the match to the fourth with the 25th-point in a 25-22 win.

Dickinson was on top early in the fourth with Camille Dofiles, Currie, Lewis, Kim and Nietert giving the Red and White a 6-4 edge. The Dutchmen then embarked on an 8-3 charge to make it 12-9 with DC kills coming from Barowski and Kim. A kill put away by Verbitsky sparked a 5-2 push finished off with a Kim score to level the score at 14-14. Kills from McInerney and Penner bumped LVC ahead 16-15, before a Willow Palmer ace and kills by Barowski and Kim took six of the ensuing seven to grab a 21-17 lead. Two kills by Popham and an error by Devyn Kelley put DC one point away from forcing a fifth (24-22), but scores by Margaret Cole and McInerney prevented that (24-24). Kills from Barowski and Kim put the Devils a point away three more times, however every time LVC had the answer. With the score locked at 27-27, an ace by McInerney and a kill from Kelli Heffer closed out the set and match 29-27.
