CHESTER, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team got double-digits out of the trio of
Clair Marion,
Lizzie McGrath and
Victoria Zerbe, but would not be enough as the Red and White were edged out by the host Widener University Pride by a score of 70-66 in double overtime on Wednesday night at the Schwartz Center.
- The first period was relatively low scoring as Marion and Zerbe gave DC a 3-0 lead with 3:22 gone.
- Five consecutive points by Mia Robbins made it 5-3, but Marion answered right away with a layup to level the game at the 5:00 mark.
- The two sides combined to come up empty on the next ten shots, before McGrath knocked down a jumper (7-5).
- Widener tallied three of the final five with Marion finding Zerbe for the Devils last basket to take a 9-8 edge through one.
- Things continued to go back-and-forth over the opening five minutes as McGrath and Zerbe had things locked at 15-15.
- A triple by Clare Cronley made it 18-15, but Kaitlyn Kearney and Lindsay Kutz answered with three straight for another tie (18-18) with 2:37 to play.
- Seven of the ensuing ten points went the way of the Devils with Jenna Weinstein, Marion and McGrath pushing the guests ahead 25-21.
- However, Kimberly Casiello and Kutz each collected a layup in the last 30 seconds to make it 25-25 after 20 minutes.
- The Pride opened up on a 6-0 charge over the first 2:17 thanks to Kearney and Kutz as they grabbed a 31-25 advantage.
- Dickinson answered with five points by Cronley and single buckets for Abby John and McGrath to jump in front 34-31 with 3:44 left.
- Widener would pull back to 34-34, before Emma Landes and John allowed the Red and White to hold a slim two-point cushion (38-36) heading to the fourth.
- The Pride came out strong as Jayla Daniels, Kutz and Robbins went on an 8-1 push to take a 44-39 lead with 3:23 gone.
- Back-to-back baskets for Zerbe coupled with an "old-fashioned" three-point play by Weinstein accounted for a 7-2 Devils run making it 46-46.
- Mia Chapman and Zerbe responded to a Robbins free throw to make it 50-47 DC with 90-seconds left.
- Widener tried to put the game away with a 7-2 sprint finished off by a three-point play for Robbins to take a 54-52 edge.
- Weinstein cashed in a layup prior to the horn sounding to force overtime at 54-54.
- It was all home side through the first three-plus minutes as they jumped out to a 61-54 edge.
- Dickinson stopped the charge with a layup from Chapman and then a steal by Marion led to a pair of McGrath foul shot to pull within 61-58 inside the final minute.
- The Devils opted to play defense instead of fouling and it paid off as Chapman forced a steal of Robbins. That allowed for the Devils to take a timeout and draw up a play that saw Chapman setup McGrath for the game-tying triple.
- For the second consecutive extra frame the Pride took the early lead as a layup from Riley Stackhouse made it 69-64 inside the final minute.
- Weinstein added a layup with a second left, but it was not enough as the home side finished out the 70-66 win.
