CARLISLE, Pa. - Junior attacker
Delaney Herbert notched three goals and handed out one assist to reach the 100-point milestone for her Dickinson career on Sunday afternoon in front of the home crowd at Biddle Field. Unfortunately, for the Red and White despite rallying back from an early 5-1 hole to take a 7-5 halftime edge, they suffered a 17-10 non-conference defeat to the 25th-ranked Denison University.
Both teams came out firing early as both Josie Lucchesi and Merrill Hollhaus were denied by
Peyton VanDorpe, while at the other end
Sage Whiteside was shutdown by Audrey Hughes all within the first four minutes. Dickinson did eventually breakthrough with 11:33 left as a foul by Grace Schlossberg led to a free-position shot and goal for Herbert. However, the Big Red then played "make it, take it" winning the next six draws leading to seven shots and five goals thanks to Maddie Morrell, Grayson O'Marra, Bridget Sheehy and Lucchesi to claim a 5-1 lead still with over six minutes remaining. After two more saves from VanDorpe, Dickinson got one final look at cage in the period, but
Emma Wynne missed wide of Hughes to send things to the second.
A stop by VanDorpe on Anna DeVuono at the 1:15 mark, set the stage for the Red and White to record the next seven shots as Herbert and Wynne were stopped by Hughes. However, Dickinson's perseverance would be rewarded as
Bella Guckes and Herbert cut the deficit down to 5-3 with just under eight minutes left. Following yet another save for VanDorpe on Mary Martinson, the Devils continued to battle back with Whiteside and Wynne going wide of target, but
Liz Barroll and Wynne each solved Hughes to knot the contest at 5-5 forcing Denison into a timeout. The Red and White would seize their first lead with 1-0 with just under ten seconds left in the half when Whiteside knocked the rock free from Kate Coward who got a pass ahead to Barroll for a shot that past Hughes right at the horn to make it 6-5 at halftime.
Just over a minute into the third Whiteside turned over Schlossberg, which resulted in a green card handed out to Big Red midfielder. On the ensuing power play opportunity, Wynne played a great pass to
Faith Parker who buried the rock to the back of the net for a 7-5 advantage. Denison responded to the Dickinson push by tallying eight of the next nine shots leading to three goals for Lucchesi, Morrell, Rollhaus and Sheehy to reclaim a 9-7 edge at the 9:36 mark. Coming off a giveaway from Ashley Viglione, that was corralled by
Izzy Hall she was able to get the ball ahead to Wynne who had a shot stopped by Hughes, but Herbert would cash in another free-position tally to end the Denison run at 9-8. Each side responded with another goal coming off a draw control as Ana Ortiz DeRosa beat VanDorpe off a win at the circle by Rollhaus, which was followed immediate by
Caroline Pirone grabbing the ensuing draw leading to Guckes finding Wynne for the finish. Julianne Henigan took over between the pipes after the ninth goal for the Devils and she was immediately tasked with turning aside Wynne on a free position shot to leave it 10-9 heading to the fourth.
An early miscue by the Devils in the fourth allowed Lucchesi to make it 11-9, before the milestone moment came for Herbert as she setup Whiteside for the score trimming it to 11-10 and recording point 100 of her career. Unfortunately, for Dickinson they could never make it back to even as the Big Red netted six more times to seal up the 17-10 road win.
