ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Junior attacker
Delaney Herbert put the ball into the net just one minute into the extra session to give the Dickinson women's lacrosse team a pivotal 12-11 Centennial Conference overtime road win over the host Muhlenberg College Mules at Scotty Wood Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was also a milestone day for Devils sophomore goalie
Peyton VanDorpe as she reached 100 groundballs with her pickup at the 7:45 mark of the third.
Dickinson had the first chance of the day when
Sage Whiteside forced a stop out of Ellison Ervin just three minutes in. The next four shots belonged to the hosts as they hit two posts and tasked VanDorpe with making one stop. The Red and White responded with four consecutive shots through
Liz Barroll,
Bella Guckes,
Faith Parker and
Emma Wynne but Ervin was there to post three saves to keep the game scoreless with six minutes left in the first. Muhlenberg tallied the first goal thanks to Nicole Steiner, before Parker and Whiteside scored on back-to-back shots for the visitors to claim a 2-1 edge after one.Â
The Mules needed just 14-seconds of the second to level things back up prior to Ervin being bested by Guckes a minute later. Following a giveaway by DC Steiner cashed in her second of the day to draw back even at 3-3. She then finished off her hat trick with 10:35 left on the power play, before watching her goalie continue to make life difficult for the Devils as she turned away Herbert, Parker and Wynne (2). After back-to-back stops for VanDorpe on Emily Vaughan, Dickinson went back down the field and got a free-position marker from Parker making it 4-4. Each keeper would record one more save in the period, while being beaten once more with Jillian Kubikowski and Herbert (
Abby Geary assist) scoring for their respective sides to keep it tied at the break (5-5).Â
To begin the third it was the Mules in control firing four shots over the opening five minutes leading to a tally by Ava Milia. After
Izzy Hall knocked the ball free from Kubikowski, the Devils went back down on the attack and cashed in twice through Geary (Barroll assist) and Barroll (
Syd MacKeigan assist) to move ahead 7-6 with 9:14 left in the frame. The home side answered right back with a two-goal run of their own thanks to Rylee Hulack and Kubikowski to give them a one-goal lead at 8-7. The game continued to seesaw back-and-forth as Geary won the following draw control and got it ahead to Wynne who found Herbert for the equalizer inside the final three minutes. Unfortunately for Dickinson it would be the Mules taking all the momentum into the fourth with goals by Steiner and Kubikowski to hold a 10-8 advantage with 45 minutes in the books.
The opening five minutes of the final period saw no real offensive threats for either side until with 4:46 off the clock a yellow card given out to Lisa DeCristofaro set the stage for Whiteside to strike on the power play. After both Ervin and VanDorpe recorded another save each, the guests leveled the game at the 9:55 mark when Guckes posted an unassisted finish. Just about a minute later a green card given to Herbert appeared to give the home side a chance to take the lead back, but instead it would be a save from VanDorpe that allowed Barroll to hit Guckes for the shorthanded goal making it 11-10. However, Kubikowski answered right back to tie the game and force the overtime period.Â
Herbert won the opening draw of the bonus session leading to a free-position shot for Wynne that was denied by Ervin, before Herbert struck 25-seconds later for the win.
