CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team knew the score on Saturday afternoon. A win in their regular season finale over the visiting Ursinus College Bears on Senior Day would send them to the Centennial Conference Tournament next week. Thanks in large part to ten combined goals by
Bella Guckes and
Delaney Herbert the Red and White were able to secure an 18-10 win in front of a fired up Biddle Field crowd.
Each keeper was tested early on as Camile Hubbs shutdown Guckes, while at the other end
Peyton VanDorpe denied Ryann Buchner. However, a minute later
Emma Wynne found Guckes for the 1-0 lead, but Maeve Leonzi answered right back. Two minutes after that the Devils began a four-goal run that saw markers come from
Liz Barroll and Herbert (3) to grab a 5-1 lead with just under four minutes left. After a Dickinson giveaway off a draw control win by
Emma Norton, Jaime Michaud stopped the charge with her first of the day. The Red and White were not done in the first though as
Caroline Pirone added to her 100-plus career draw control wins claiming the rock and finding Wynne who found Guckes for the 6-2 edge with 15 minutes in the book.Â
It took just 26-seconds for Michaud to bag another goal for the Bears, before VanDorpe had to make two more stops to keep the gap at four. With four minutes off the clock Herbert added onto her 100-plus career goals by finishing off a nice pass from Barroll (7-3). After VanDorpe notched two more saves against Ashley Noto and Leonzi, the Devils cashed in twice during a 54-second outburst with
Crawford Fisher and
Abby Geary finding the back of the net behind Hubbs making it 6-3 with 3:47 left. Mary Michaud pulled one back for the guests off the ensuing draw control, before a turnover by Julie Cherneskie caused by Wynne led to
Faith Parker burying the rock for a 10-4 halftime advantage.
The Bears came out firing on all cylinders to begin the third as Grace Lynch and Julia McCann solving VanDorpe with just 2:45 off the clock trimming the gap to 10-6. Over the next eight minutes Dickinson would hold an 8-1 shot advantage forcing Hubbs into two saves and ringing one crossbar. However, they finally found paydirt once more with 2:56 left when Parker knocked the ball free from Sammy Leusner leading to a free-position strike by Wynne. However, the last two minutes saw the Bears get closer once again with McCann scoring twice pulling within 11-8 with a quarter left.
For the second period in a row the Bears struck early as Leonzi was stopped by VanDorpe, but she corralled her own rebound and stuck it in the net making it 11-9. A failed clear for Ursinus resulted in the 12th of the game for DC thanks to Herbert, before Geary setup Wynne for a power play tally less than a minute later. Dickinson continued to pile it on as Guckes scored on a free-position chance and then tallied again off a turnover forced by
Syd MacKeigan (15-9) with just under ten minutes to play. Lynch would cut it down to 15-10, but
Sage Whiteside, Herbert and Wynne each racked up one more goal for the Devils to set the 18-10 final.
