SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack featuring seven different goal scorers and survived a late rally from the host Swarthmore College Garnet to post a 13-11 Centennial Conference win on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Stadium
Neither team was able to get on track offensively early in the game as there was just one shot over the first four plus minutes when Isabela Bloomquist hit the post behind
Peyton VanDorpe. That would allow for Dickinson to take the lead when
Abby Geary setup
Sage Whiteside for the finish, but Kela Watts answered back about two minutes later to tie things at 1-1 with 8:41 to play. The Red and White tallied the next four shots with
Delaney Herbert and
Marnie Todd going wide, before
Liz Barroll hit Herbert for the goal. The assist for Barroll on that goal was her 100th-point in a Dickinson jersey. After VanDorpe shutdown Bloomquist later in the period, both
Bella Guckes and Geary would stash the rock behind Garnet keeper Helen Stafford to hold a 4-1 lead into the second.Â
Swarthmore started the quarter on the front-foot as VanDorpe was tasked with making saves against Aubree Daugherty and Bloomquist, but Daugherty would eventually cash in on a free-position shot to close within 4-2 with 11:36 to go. Three minutes later Dickinson picked up a pair of goals in a 38-second span when
Faith Parker found Geary for her second and
Emma Wynne moved the net for the 6-2 advantage with 7:11 off the clock. Stafford turned away Guckes twice to prevent DC from adding one, which allowed Abigail Love to pull one back for the home side (6-3). The Swarthmore goalie continued to be busy shutting down Herbert two more times, prior to Wynne hitting the back of the cage pushing it to 7-3 at the half.Â
The Garnet were on the attack early in the third with Bloomquist and Watts each recording two shots resulting in one goal (7-4). However, the Red and White responded just over a minute later as Wynne hit the post, but Whiteside was there to scoop up the rock and put it in the net making it 8-4. Three minutes after that the Devils would ride the momentum of another VanDorpe save this time on Love to their ninth goal of the game thanks to Wynne (free-position). The final three minutes of the period saw the goals just flood into both nets as each team tallied twice with Barroll and Parker striking for the visitors, while Gillian Will and Daugherty scored for the hosts leaving it at 11-6 entering the fourth.
Dickinson recorded four of the first five shots of the frame with Stafford beating away chances from
Syd MacKeigan and Guckes, but not being able to get to the shot by Barroll as she pushed it to 12-6 with five minutes gone. The Garnet then found themselves back on the scoreboard with 5:54 gone through Elizabeth Zack, before Wynne answer the ensuing minute to make it 13-7. Swarthmore would use the remaining seven minutes to try and find a way back into the game as they limited the Devils to just one shot, while scoring four of their own. Fourtnately, it was not enough as Dickinson locked up the 13-11 victory.
