Devils Fall Just Short of Steel City Upset Against #19 Tartans in OT

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team was feeling good at halftime on Monday afternoon as they held a 44-39 advantage over the 19th-ranked team in the nation Carnegie Mello University. Unfortunately, for the Red and White despite putting four players in double-digits, including a double-double from David Petrusev they came out on the wrong end of a 101-92 non-conference overtime decision at the Highmark Center.
Template - 1st Half
  • The teams traded shots early as a pair of Juan Ruiz layups helped DC to be within one early at 5-4.
  • Dickinson used the next four minutes to go on an 11-2 run with baskets coming from Joey Dopirak, Isaiah Edmond and David Petrusev to take a 15-7 edge with 13:51 left.
  • A finish from Lucas Pavlounis started a 7-2 push for the hosts ending on a triple by Justin Allen to trim the gap to 17-14 at the 9:38 mark.
  • Ryan Lesakuskas answered 20 seconds later with a jumper, before Brandon Wiercinski capped off the Devils 9-2 charge over the ensuing two-plus minutes to take a double-digit lead at 26-16.
  • The trio of Cole Cosby, Matt Mahoney and Edmond continued to keep the Tartans at bay as a layup for Cosby with 5:13 remaining made it 33-22.
  • However, the home side then started heating up from deep with Sam Andreottola, Aidan Murphy and Allen all sticking treys pulling the margin to 35-31 inside of four minutes.
  • Edmond, Leskauskas and Petrusev kept filling it up for DC stretching the lead to 42-33, but three-balls for Allen and Andreottola gave CMU life going to the break at 44-39.
Template - 2nd Half
  • The opening three-plus minutes saw the Red and White continue to push the Tartans back as buckets for Edmond and Wiercinski made it 48-45, before a 12-2 CMU response opened up a 57-50 lead with 13:21 to play.
  • Dopirak, Edmond, Petrusev and Ruiz helped the Devils fight back with an 11-5 sprint to cut the deficit down to just one (62-61).
  • Much like how DC did in the first half CMU was able to repel a push by their opponent as Alex Hassanein and Allen joined together for a 12-4 outburst of their own to open the advantage out to 74-65 with 12:38 off the clock.
  • The next two minutes saw Dickinson collected points from Dopirak, Edmond and Petrusev to get within 78-73.
  • Five straight for Allen made it 83-75 (3:32), but the Red and White never gave up as the group of Edmond, Mahoney and Petrusev closed out a 10-0 run to actually take an 85-83 advantage inside the last minute.
  • However, Hassanein would drill two at the charity line to force the extra session.
  • The home side began the frame strong as Nolan Casey, R.J. Holmes and Allen combined for an 8-2 run over the first 2:32 to grab a 93-87 edge.
  • Dopirak and Edmond tried to keep the Devils afloat with the score reading 98-91 with 66 seconds left.
  • Baskets by Buckley DeJardin and Allen made it so DC could not get any closer as they finished out the 101-92 victory.
