CARLISLE, Pa. - The 13th-ranked Dickinson field hockey team got a first-half marker from
Erin Liggio to take a 1-0 lead in the first and then added a 56th-minute penalty stroke from
Natalie Slusser to lift the Red and White past the visiting Swarthmore College by a score of 2-1 in conference action at the Biddle Field Complex.
First Quarter
- Dickinson had a couple of early penalty corner chances, but neither one resulted in a shot towards Cassandra Conklin.
- At the other end in the fifth minute, a corner inserted by Avery Bloom led to two shots for Liza Semenenko which forced Taylor Morrow to make one save.
- With five minutes to play Gillian Rosenstock and Slusser each had a shot blocked by the defense. Fortunately, for the Devils Liggio was able to collect the loose ball and stash it past Conklin to make it 1-0 heading to the second.
Second Quarter
- Seven minutes into the frame back-to-back corners played into the circle by Hayley Harris allowed for Semenenko to recorded another shot that once again was denied by Morrow.
- The Red and White were in the attacking area less than a minute later earning their own corner, but the ensuing shot from Liggio off the feed in by Rosenstock was shutdown.
- Swarthmore had the final three cracks at cage in the period with Morrow making two stops, while Magdelana Jordan was able to force the ball across the goal line to level the score at the break.
Third Quarter
- Dickinson was on the attack just over a minute in as a corner from Rosenstock allowed Liggio to let a shot go at Conklin who made the stop, before the ensuing rebound chance by Megan McClure skipped wide.
- In the next five minute segment Slusser had a chance blocked by the defense, while Sophia Pereira watched her shot get stopped by Conklin.
- The final three minutes of the period saw the play tilt down towards the Dickinson defensive half as opportunities for Erin Coyle and Zoe Larsen were shutdown by Morrow to end the period.
Fourth Quarter
- It took nearly seven minutes to see the opening shots with Conklin beating away chances for Alex Hackett and Alexandra Hockwitt.
- Then in the 56th minute, a foul in the circle against the Swarthmore defender for a clear denial of an attacker to play the ball resulted in a penalty stroke. Slusser stepped up to the spot and wrong-footed Conklin for a 2-1 edge.
- In the final three minutes Swarthmore would pull Conklin for an extra attacker and earn three penalty corners resulting in just one shot from Sarah Cooper with 37-seconds left that was swatted aside by Morrow ending the game.
