First Half Tallies Give Devils Key CC Win Over Fords

CARLISLE, Pa. - Bridget Merkel and Joelle Ma each found the net within six minutes of each other to help the Dickinson women's soccer team secure a massive three points in the Centennial Conference table thanks to a 2-1 win over Haverford College at Miller Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the match, the Red and White honored their eight seniors: Lila Brown, Rachel Gevanthor, Isra Khan, Georgia Mantione, Ellie Nordwind, Maddie St. Amand, Katey Van Kirk and Katie Vassilakos.

First Half
  • Within the opening dozen minutes Dickinson was on the attack posting four shots thanks to Isabelle Bariso, Anna Bitsko, Mantione and St. Aman, but HC keeper Lily Buyer was there to record on save.
  • Over the ensuing seven minutes Buyer had to make three more stops shutting down Catherine Fleck, Ava Prisco and Bitsko.
  • Then, in the 24th, the home side was rewarding for all their hard work when Merkel beat the netminder for a 1-0 edge.
  • Six minutes later it became 2-0 when a foul on Claire Parker in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Devils. Ma was the individual that stepped up to the spot and sent the ball past Buyer.
  • Ten minutes from halftime Abigale Baker rippled the net behind Pico Gray to trim the margin to 2-1.
Second Half
  • To begin the period Allie Billups took over between the sticks for the Fords and she was immediately tested by Bitsko just about six minutes in.
  • Brown recorded the ensuing two chances for the hosts, but both missed the mark as the match entered the final 20 minutes.
  • In the 70th, Haverford had the opportunity to draw level as a foul on Merkel led to a penalty kick. Fortunately, for the Devils Emma Kirk missed from 12-yards out.
  • Both keepers were forced into making a save within two minutes of each other with Billups stopping Merkel, while Gray had an answer for Sophia Mitchell.
  • Norah Heacock and Nordwind added shots in the 76th and 80th respectively. However, they were not able to find the net as the match came to a close.
