Late Field Goal Lets Diplomats Slip Past Devils in Heartbreaker

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson football team returned to play looking to bring the Conestoga Wagon trophy back to Carlisle as the Red and White welcomed the Diplomats of Franklin and Marshall College to Biddle Field for the annual rivalry game. A late fourth quarter touchdown for the Devils tied the contest at 20-20, but a 29-yard field goal by Michael Fleming with one second left allowed the Wagon to head back to Lancaster as the Diplomats secured a 23-20 conference win.

First Quarter
  • After each team went three-and-out on their opening drive, Dickinson began their second march with the ball on their own 17. Rushes for Cedric Benning III, Keesean Campbell and Ben Klassen pushed the ball to the DC30. Klassen then connected with Moritz Mittendorfer for 28, Braden White for a dozen and Kellen Boyer for eight had the Red and White on the F&M16. Unfortunately, for Dickinson the drive would stall out forcing a 32-yard field goal for Justin Worobel which he knocked through.
  • The visitors would take the ensuing possession to their own 31, before they were forced to punt down to the DC25. A 15-yard reception by Leon Friebel and 18-yard rush for Klassen put the hosts on the F&M43 to end the period.
Second Quarter
  • The Devils continued the drive with passes to Campbell and Friebel advancing to the F&M15 setting up a first down. A seven-yard catch by Campbell had the home side on the guests eight-yardline, but once again things stalled out resulting in a 25-yard field goal for Worobel making it 6-0 with 12:11 left.
  • F&M would be kept off the board again as tackles for Jimmy Mulholland and Josh Moses left things at fourth-and-three leading to a 34-yard punt for Ivan Harlamov to the DC25. Unfortunately, for Dickinson the drive would be cut short five plays in when Klassen was picked off by Oscar Marx putting the Diplomats in business on the DC45.
  • Runs by Jake Fant and Louis Paris helped the visitors to get down to the DC29. That was when Ty Tremba linked up with Gary Lewis for a 29-yard touchdown and a 7-6 edge (Michael Fleming kick).
  • After a punt from each team, the Red and White went in search of some late points starting on their 30 with 1:47 to play. Completions to Mittendorfer and Boyer for 11 and 15 respectively coupled by a 14 carry from Klassen made it first-and-ten at the F&M30. Klassen would hit Liam Kallen for 14 across the middle of the field, before he found Friebel in the endzone to make it 13-7 at halftime (Justin Worobel kick).
Third Quarter
  • The Diplomats got the ball to begin the half and embarked on a very methodical ten-plus play drive that saw them advance to the DC2 thanks to a 28-yard pass to Lewis. Fant then came back in at quarterback and ran it down to the one, before a pair of "tush pushes" with Tremba were met by strong resistance as tackles from Cedric Jungmann and Sam Orzolek forced fourth-and-goal. Fant would try his luck again, but both Sean Couvertiere and Jason Genilello stacked him up ending a nearly nine-minute march with no points.
  • Unfortunately, for Dickinson their possession ended three plays in when Marx popped the ball free from Campbell leading to F&M setting up on the Devils 12. Two plays later F&M retook the lead at 14-13 with Tremba finding Lewis for the score (Michael Fleming kick).
  • Passes to Mittendorfer and Schmidt had the home side on the DC35, but ultimately they had to settle for a Michael Furlong punt. The Diplomats would set themselves up with another short field as the 40 yard punt came to Chris Albero who ran it back 51 yards to the DC24.
Fourth Quarter
  • The six-play visiting drive ended on the first play of the period when Fleming knocked down a 22-yard field goal to extend the margin to 17-13.
  • A rush of eight yards by Campbell and a pair of unnecessary roughness penalties advanced Dickinson to the F&M34. Giovanni Del Re carried for five and Campbell thrown back for a loss of one to the F&M30 bringing up third-and-six. On that play, Albero broke through the line for an eight-yard sack forcing another Furlong punt to the F&M15.
  • Tremba used a pair of passes to Hudson Zawadzkas to cross midfield up to the DC36. Three straight runs between the tandem of Anthony Valdez and Paris picked up 16 yards to the 20. Once again the Devils defense locked things down resulting in a 37-yard Fleming field goal extending the advantage to 20-13 with 7:43 left.
  • Two carries from Dane Sorensen and a 19-yard rush for Klassen advanced the rock to the F&M42. Passes to Mittendorfer for four and Schmidt for 11 helped the Red and White get to the 24 looking at first down. After an incompletion, Liam Kallen hauled in a 12-yard pass down on the F&M12, before two plays later Klassen beat the defender to the right pylon leveling the score at 20-20 with 3:47 to go (Justin Worobel kick).
  • After both sides went three-and-out, the Diplomats went to work on own their own 29 with just over 90-seconds remaining. On third-and-ten Tremba found Jack Harrison for 33 to set them up on the DC37. Unfortunately for the Devils a pass interference call on second-and-nine put the guests down to the DC22. On the ensuing play Paris ran for 13 to the nine allowing Fleming to come on two plays later for the buzzer beating and game-winning 29-yard field goal (23-20).
