NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Dickinson men's basketball team started off Saturday's evening's matchup with the host Christopher Newport University really well taking an 11-2 lead and riding that all the way to a 36-25 halftime advantage. Unfortunately, the Captains who are were ranked number nine in the country to start the year and currently still receiving votes showed why over the remaining 20 minutes outpacing the Red and White 54-32 en route to a 79-68 non-conference win inside the Freeman Center.
First Half
- Dickinson came out "Red Hot" as buckets from Isaiah Edmond, Dane Moran and Jacob Pichay had the visitors ahead 11-2 four minutes in.
- Toa Hollenbeck tried to slow the Devils roll for a moment, but contributions from Cole Cosby, Joey Dopirak and Juan Ruiz extended the lead to 17-6 with 6:08 gone.
- Collin Hines used the ensuing five-plus minutes to rack up seven points for the Captains trimming the gap to 19-13 DC.
- However, a three-ball out of the hands of Andrew Cerullo along with free throws from Edmond and J. Ruiz coupled with a long-range effort by Luis Ruiz made it 28-18 at the five-minute mark.
- Hollenbeck continued to be a "one-man" show for the hosts collecting points 12 and 13 of the half at the charity stripe to cut the deficit down to just seven (30-23) with 2:03 to go.
- Dickinson would end the frame strong though with the trio of Edmond, Moran and Pichay all finding the bottom of the bucket in the final 90-seconds giving the Red and White a 36-25 halftime advantage.
Second Half
- The Captains showed why they were nationally-ranked at the beginning of the season early in the period as Tyson Henderson, Tyler Sprague and Hines embarked on a 13-2 sprint over the opening 4:25 to draw even at 38-38.
- A layup for J. Ruiz off a nice feed from Cerullo gave the lead back to the Devils 40-38, before points by Isaiah Dozier and Jason Ofcarcik sent the hosts ahead for the first time 42-40 with 12:41 left.
- Buckets for Cerullo, Edmond and Moran over the next few moments continued to keep Dickinson within striking distance at 49-47 at the halfway point of the frame.
- Consecutive layups for Ryan Derderian opened the gap to 53-47, but triples by Cerullo and L. Ruiz pulled the away side level (53-53) at the under eight minute media timeout.
- Over the next couple of minutes the teams traded scores, unfortunately, a triple knocked down by Sprague broke the 57-57 deadlock making it 60-57 as the final media timeout was reached.
- The duo of Moran and Pichay did what they could to keep the Devils fighting as DC sat down two (64-62) just over two minutes to play.
- However, the Captains used baskets from Derderian, Hines, Hollenback, Ofcarcik and Sprague to put together a 15-6 run throughout the rest of the game to finish off the 79-68 win.
