No. 15 Marlins Swim Past Devils on Sunday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Less than 24-hours after giving the preseason number nine team in the nation Christopher Newport University all they could handle, the Dickinson men's basketball team returned to the Freeman Center for a battle with the 15th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan University. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the Marlins were able to collect a 74-56 non-conference win.

First Half
  • After the Devils had the fast start yesterday, it was the Marlins who took command early as a jumper by Cole Cosby was the only DC bucket for the first six minutes allowing VWU to jump ahead 20-2.
  • Over the next five minutes triples for Matt Mahoney and Cosby along with foul shots by Juan Ruiz made it 25-12.
  • Following an "old-fashioned" three-point play for Omari Deveaux, Dane Moran accounted for five of the next seven points scored by the Red and White bringing the margin to 30-19 still with seven minutes left.
  • Shots at the charity stripe for Jacob Pichay and Moran coupled with two layups by Isaiah Edmond could only allow Dickinson to keep the margin at roughly the same gap 38-26 at the 2:56 mark.
  • Layups for Tykie Jones and Malcolm Velmar were answered by a basket for Cosby to leave it at 42-28 through 20 minutes.
Second Half
  • Edmond opened the frame up by drilling a triple off a nice feed from Pichay, but the Marlins then went on a 16-0 response to extend their advantage to 58-31 with 12:57 left.
  • The Devils then got hot from deep with Joey Dopirak, Ryan Leskauskas and Mahoney all cashed, while Luis Ruiz and Pichay each picked up two cutting the deficit to 64-44 at the under eight timeout.
  • Three balls for TJ East and Deveaux helped the Marlins get six of the ensuing eight points stretching the margin to 70-46 inside of seven to go.
  • The trio of Ian Polonowski, Cosby and Edmond splashed home treys coupled with layups for Gabe Glover and Pichay capped the scoring at 74-56.
