Devils Start Coach Sohns Era With Shootout Win Over No. 9 Messiah

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson field hockey team kicked off the 2025 season in grand style on Friday afternoon going to the entire 80 minutes plus a shootout to secure 1-0 non-conference win over the ninth-ranked Messiah University at the Biddle Field Complex. Megan McClure scored the lone goal in the shootout, while Taylor Morrow went a perfect five-for-five in goal.

First Quarter
  • It took until the fourth minute to see the first shot of the game as Chelsea Carpenter was denied by Morrow.
  • That sparked the Falcons attack as they recorded the remaining four shots forcing two stops from Morrow and a brilliant clearance off the line by Calyn Clements on an offering from Naomi Lyter to keep it 0-0 after one.
Second Quarter
  • Dickinson just 84 seconds to earn their first corner of the campaign. The ball was inserted by Caroline Kirkpatrick to Nicole Uebele who let one fly at Joy Lippert, but was turned away.
  • The ensuing five plus minutes were played primarily in the midfield with neither team able to sustain any constant offensive pressure.
  • Messiah gained the attacking circle and forced a corner in the 24th-minute. However, the ensuing offering for Ellie Lefever was blocked down by the defense.
  • Malena Malka Goldman got one last look in the final minute, unfortunately, Lippert was able to steer it wide sending the game to halftime.
Third Quarter
  • The Falcons would control most of the period earning two penalty corners and taking three shots, but none of them made it through to Morrow.
  • At the other end of the pitch the DC attack was kept under wraps as they were unable to tally a shot.
Fourth Quarter
  • The entire frame was tightly contested with both sides not wanting to give an inch as both Lippert and Morrow did not see a single attempt come their way resulting in overtime.
First Overtime
  • As play shifted to "seven-on-seven" the Devils came out on the front foot as first-years Alex Hackett and Gillian Rosenstock took cracks at Lippert resulting in one save over the first two minutes.
  • After Dickinson was not able to take advantage of a pair of penalty corners, Messiah worked their way down the field and got a shot of their own thanks to Carpenter fortunately Morrow was up to the task.
Second Overtime
  • The Falcons tried to soar to victory inside the opening minute as a corner led to a pair of chances for Carpenter that Morrow denied.
  • Just under two minutes later the Devils had an opportunity to end the game, but Rosenstock was unable to solve Lippert.
  • Messiah notched the final three shots of the extra time with Morrow shutting down Anna Bea Koenig and Casey Tyrrell, before watching Aubrey Clark's last ditch effort trickle wide leading to the shootout.
