WINCHESTER, Va. - They say when things look in doubt or when you need a hero you look to your best players to step up and deliver that clutch moment. Fortunately, for the 10th-ranked Dickinson men's soccer team that is exactly what happened on Wednesday night as senior forward
Saul Iwowo grabbed his third goal of the season in the 83rd minute to give the Red and White a 1-0 non-conference win over Shenandoah University at Shentel Stadium.
First Half
- Both keepers were tested inside the opening ten minutes as Jake Ziervogel denied Iwowo, while at the other end Nick Potter shutdown Nick Mattiace not even a minute later.
- The remainder of the period saw just one more shot as both sides were unable to grab a foothold in the match as Ethan Jarden missed to the left on goal in 25th minute.
Second Half
- Coming out of the break Shenandoah put Dickinson under some duress earning two corners and recording three shots within the opening ten minutes. Fortunately, for the Devils only one got through to Potter which he was able to steer away.
- The Red and White were inches away from getting the lead during the 72nd when an attempt by Iwowo got past the keeper, but a lurking defender on the line was able to clear the ball away to keep it 0-0.
- Over the ensuing eight minutes the Hornets posted three shots to the Devils one, however, each keeper was tasked with making just one save apiece as the match entered the final ten minutes.
- Then, in the 81st minute with the home side on the attack Olvin Martinez tasked Potter into making two more stops. That would then allow the Red and White to get out on the counter attack which ultimately resulted in Iwowo cashing in an unassisted tally to make it 1-0 with 82:53 gone.
- Shenandoah got one final look five minutes from time, but Jarbin Rodriguez was stopped by Potter to finish off the cleansheet.
