Offense Erupts for Second Straight Week as Devils Upend Warriors

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - 52 seems to be the number for the Dickinson football team as for the second consecutive week the Red and White posted 52 points in a victory as they bested the host Lycoming College Warriors by a score of 52-29 in non-conference action at Girardi Stadium. The Devils offense was led by quarterback Ben Klassen who threw for 266 yards, while Cedric Benning III added 173 on the ground.

First Quarter
  • It was the Dickinson defense that got it done on the opening drive of the game as Valdemar Enghave stuffed Terrence Oliver for one yard on second down, before Sean Couvertiere picked off Joe Lyons three plays into the game to put DC in business on the LC48.
  • Dane Sorensen ripped off a 40-yard run on the second play from scrimmage to the LC8. However, two three-yard carries by Sorensen and a two-yard loss made it fourth-and-goal on the LC4. That would bring on Justin Worobel who knocked down a 21-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
  • The next couple of drives went by with neither side able to do much which led to Lycoming starting at their own 22 with just under seven minutes left. The Warriors needed two plays to take their first lead when Oliver ran home from 73 yards out (Vasco Granitto kick). However, the lead was short lived as for the second straight week Keesean Campbell took a kickoff to the house this time racing 88 yards back to the lead 10-7 (Justin Worobel kick).
  • Lyons passes of 19 and 10 to Michael VanHorn and Brendan Clark respectively coupled with a 22-yard rush by Oliver moved the home team to the DC24. That was Lyons aired it out to Ross Eyer for a 24-yard strike to reclaim the advantage at 14-10 (Vasco Granitto kick).
Second Quarter
  • Three passes from Klassen to Kellen Boyer and a pair of carries by Benning III left DC on the LC46 to end the first. Short connections to Braden White and Sorensen helped the visitors chip away down to the LC33. Then, facing a 3rd-and-14, Klassen launched one down the middle of the field to Boyer who hauled it in at the five, before taking it the rest of the way for a touchdown (17-14) (Justin Worobel kick).
  • A Warriors three-and-out ended with a 38-yard punt from Adrian Alena to the DC14. Three consecutive touches for Sorensen advanced the ball to the DC33. Passes of 14 to White and 19 to Mathias Young gave the Devils first-and-ten on the LC28. Three plays later Klassen went back to White for a 28-yard TD strike pushing the lead to double-digits at 24-14 at the halfway point of the period (Justin Worobel kick).
  • Lycoming then used a balanced 12-play march to milk over six minutes off the clock and get all the way down to the DC21. Fortunately, for the Red and White that was where the drive came to an abrupt halt as Lyons pass was picked off by Chris Barnes at the DC2 with 69-seconds left.
  • Dickinson attempted to just run the clock out as Benning III carried for three yards, but then Sorensen burst through the defense for 71 yards up to the LC25 with 50 ticks remaining. Klassen would then do it on his own with the legs as he carried down to the LC5, before scampering home from five away taking a 31-14 halftime edge (Justin Worobel kick).
Third Quarter
  • After the Devils opening possession did not result in any points runs from Spencer Ferguson, Oliver and VanHorn put the Warriors at the LC39. That was when Lyons was sacked by Julien Devlin and put the ball on the turf allowing Jimmy Mulholland to jump on top of it giving it back to the Red and White on the 39.
  • Following a three-yard carry for Sorensen, a 14-yard reception by Benning III and 13-yard completion from Klassen to Leon Friebel helped push the Red and White to the LC7. Benning III toted the rock on back-to-back plays and ultimately ended up in the endzone to stretch the DC advantage to 24 at 38-14 after three (Justin Worobel kick).
Fourth Quarter
  • With Dickinson marching towards more points to end the third the Devils possession would stall out on the first play of the period when Klassen had a pass intended for Boyer picked off by Ryan Pentz. On the ensuing Lycoming drive they needed just one play as Lyons handed off to Oliver who did the rest racing in from 89-yards out (Vasco Granitto kick).
  • Four minutes into the frame DC started a drive at their own 42 yardline. Runs of 31 and 19 by Benning III helped the guests to get up to the LC1. That was when Klassen connected with Young for the score and the 45-21 advantage (Justin Worobel kick).
  • On the kickoff Jared Zimmerman returned the ball to the DC35. Passes to Colin McGory and Clark put the Warriors on the three yardline. Oliver would find himself in the endzone again this time through the air thanks to Lyons arm (two-point conversion).
  • Dickinson used the ground game to finish off the scoring as the duo of Benning III and Campbell combined for 60 yards ending with Campbell running it in from four out making it 52-29 (Justin Worobel kick).
