Devils Win Streak Halted by Sea Gulls in Five Set Classic

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team had their five-match winning streak come to an unfortunate halt on Friday night falling by a score of 3-2 to the visiting Salisbury University in a five-set classic inside the Kline Center. The Red Devils' effort included a strong second set, highlighted by a dozen kills and a .233 hitting percentage, but the Sea Gulls' balance would be the reason that the guests ultimately prevailed. 

First Set
  • The teams exchanged early points, with Amelia Kim and Sophia Tapia each securing kills to keep the score level at 2-2.  
  • Salisbury gained momentum with a 7-3 run, Jasmine Nelson contributing with a kill and a service ace from Prudence Marco.  
  • Eliette Whittaker's kill trimmed the lead to 14-8, but Tapia's subsequent kill helped the Sea Gulls maintain their advantage.  
  • Tapia and Kiley McTaggart led the Seagulls to close the set 25-19, Tapia sealing it with a decisive kill.
Second Set
  • The Sea Gulls initially took a 5-3 lead, capitalizing on a kill from Alyssa DeWaal and a service ace by Annabelle Weis. 
  • DC responded to the early deficit, tying the set at 5-5 with consecutive kills by Mallie Thomas
  • Camille Dofiles powered a decisive run, serving two aces and contributing to a 7-0 stretch, pushing the Red Devils ahead 13-7. 
  • Jessica Currie and Kim combined for crucial kills for the Devils, extending their lead to 21-10.
  • Currie and Thomas recorded kills down the stretch to secure the set for the Red Devils at 25-15.
Third Set
  • Salisbury initiated a strong start with Tapia and McTaggart contributing early kills for a 3-0 lead. 
  • Thomas and Whittaker produced kills for DC, but they still found themselves down 8-5.
  • The visitors extended their lead to 14-8 with DeWaal and Maura Fay adding kills, while Nelson facilitated multiple assists.  
  • Currie and Thomas attempted to rally Dickinson with key kills, but Salisbury closed the set 25-15 with a final kill from Tapia.
Fourth Set
  • Dickinson came out of the gates flying as kills for Emery Fishbach, Kim, Thomas and Whittaker along with an ace from Amanda Palo made it 9-3 DC.
  • After three straight by SU, Currie, Dofiles, Fishbach and Thomas tallied seven of the next ten to extend the margin to 16-9.
  • Salisbury mounted a challenge as Fay and DeWaal each added kills, narrowing the gap to 19-16.
  • Two Thomas scores and individual kills by Currie, Fishbach and Whittaker capped off the 25-22 win.
Fifth Set
  • Dickinson opened with a 1-0 lead following an attack error by Salisbury's DeWaal, blocked by Whittaker and Currie.  
  • The Sea Gulls responded with a series of kills from McTaggart, building a 5-2 advantage.
  • A joint block by Thomas and Whittaker along with one kill each from Fishbach and Thomas knotted the score at 7-7.
  • The visitors used an 8-4 burst ending on a kill for McTaggart to end the match 15-11.

  • Dickinson (9-5) doesn't have much time to dwell on the loss as they are right back at it tomorrow afternoon hosting a tri-match inside the Kline Center. The Red and White will battle Moravian University at noon, before taking on University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg at 4pm.
