Late Rally Leads Red Devils to Overtime Win at McDaniel

Box Score

(Westminster, Md) – The Dickinson football team rallied from a 10-point, fourth quarter deficit to force overtime and overtake McDaniel College, 38-31, on Saturday.

The Red Devils received the opening kick-off but were forced to punt, pinning McDaniel on their own 11 yard line. Penalties played a key role in the stalling of McDaniel's first drive, forcing them to punt the ball back to Dickinson.

The Red Devils fumbled on their next possession, handing the ball back to the Terror on the 27 yard line. McDaniel capitalized on the next play as Joe Rollins broke a pair of tackles to find his way into the end zone with 5:58 to play in the first quarter. That was the first time the Terror held a lead all season.

The Devils were forced to punt and the Green Terror took over on their own 20 yard line, following a touchback. Sophomore Connor Thompson (Jenkintown, Pa./Father Judge) intercepted a pass, giving Dickinson the ball on the Terror 28.

Shawn Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) tied the game with a four-yard run, set up by senior Shea Licata (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) to open the second quarter.

McDaniel would later capitalize, blocking a Dickinson punt and recovering the Devils' 28-yard line. Rollins would find pay-dirt to cap a five play drive, giving the Green Terror a 14-7 lead with 9:10 remaining in the first half.

The Red Devils answered once again, pulling within a field-goal on a nine-yard touchdown run by Mike Capone (Dupont, Pa./Pittston Area) with 6:51 on the clock. Wilson gave the Devils their first lead of the game, pulling in a 32 yard pass from sophomore Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) with just 1:08 to play in the half.

The Devils controlled the clock in the third quarter, keeping the ball in their possession. McDaniel kicked a 20-yard field-goal on the opening drive and started its second possession of the half with just 2:38 to play in the period.

Rollins would answer quickly, however, breaking free for a 58-yard touchdown run, giving him 180 yards rushing on the day, and putting the Terror in front, 24-21, with 2:02 on the clock.

Just two minutes later, the Terror would strike again, blocking another punt and recovering it in the end zone to stretch the lead to 31-21.

Dickinson scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Senior Bligh Cassidy (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) capped a 68-yard drive with a two-yard run to pull the Devils within a field-goal at the 7:51 mark.

Sophomore Adam Kaminski (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) ricocheted a 33-yard field-goal off the left upright and through to tie the game with just eight seconds remaining in regulation.

The Devils used just three plays to score in overtime as Ahnell connected with senior wide receiver Matt Wood (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) for a 12-yard touchdown to put Dickinson in front, 38-31.

The defense would hold on McDaniel's possession to secure the win as the Devils improve to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference.

First-year David Clemens (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) earned a surprise start and completed four passes for 75 yards before Ahnell took over under center. Ahnell completed 9-for-14 passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. He added 83 yards on the ground.

Wood was just shy of the century mark, making five catches for 98 yards. Capone and Wilson each ran for 43 yards and a touchdown while Cassidy finished with 41 yards rushing.

Rollins finished with 216 yards rushing on the day, scoring three touchdowns.

Shane Mitchell (Whitehaven, Pa./Crestwood) led the defense with 11 tackles and an 11-yard sack. Thompson made nine stops to go with his interception. Junior co-captain Michael Miller (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace) made 10 tackles as well while senior Marek Laco (Potomac, Md./Landon) recorded eight.

Mike Cousar led McDaniel with 12 tackles and a sack while Zach Martin made 11 stops, blocked a punt and added a sack as well. The Green Terror slip to 0-7 on the season and 0-6 in the Centennial Conference.

The Red Devils improve to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference. They return home to face Muhlenberg College next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
