(Selinsgrove, Pa.) – Senior Marybeth McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored with no time remaining, forcing overtime at Susquehanna University on Friday afternoon. The goal came off a penalty corner as the Red Devil field hockey team rallied from a 3-1 deficit in their season opener.
First-year Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) turned in an outstanding performance in her collegiate debut, dishing out an assist on the game-tying goal and scoring in the 66th minute to keep the Red Devils within striking distance.
Nicole Solino put Susquehanna on the board first, scoring off an assist from Ally Bradley in the 20th minute. Sophomore Celeste Pilato (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) tied the game, scoring 6:44 into the second half.
Bradley put the hosts back on top, dishing out an assist to Gina Palazzi with 13:52 remaining in regulation. Solino struck again, scoring unassisted off a rebound to stretch the lead to 3-1.
The Red Devils answered on a penalty corner with 4:47 on the clock as senior Alex Boorse (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) tallied an assist, feeding Karwel. Sophomore Natalie Polk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) added an assist on game-tying corner as well, connecting with Karwel and McCarthy after time had expired in regulation.
Bradley would prove to be the difference, scoring the game-winning goal at the 78:45 mark, finishing a pass from Emily Reich to give Susquehanna the 4-3 win.
The Devils turned in a strong performance to start the season, holding a 32-20 advantage in shots, forcing Margaret Ruth to make 14 saves. Junior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made 11 saves for Dickinson.
The Red Devils return to action on Saturday, hosting Shenandoah University at noon.
