(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team had a tough outing at Gettysburg on Saturday, falling to the Bullets, 42-7.
Zach Miller threw for 281 yards and a touchdown while Eddie Hutchins rushed for three touchdowns and 58 yards.
The Bullets jumped out to an early lead, scoring on their first possession, on a one-yard run by Kyle Wigley. Sophomore Mark Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) blocked the extra-point to hold the score at 6-0.
Gettysburg found pay-dirt again on its second drive, going 80 yards on 14 plays to extend the lead to 13-0, with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter. The Bullets added a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, going for a two-point conversion on one to stretch the margin to 21-0, at halftime.
Dickinson got on the board on its first possession of the second half. Junior quarterback Michael Carmella (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) led the Devils on a seven play, 73-yard scoring drive, capped by a five-yard run from sophomore Shawn Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep), with 12:00 minutes to play in the third.
Wilson rushed for 38 yards on the drive and Dickinson capitalized on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, moving the ball to the Gettysburg five yard line.
Hutchins closed out the scoring with a pair of one yard touchdowns in each quarter of the second half.
Wigley rushed for a game-high 76 yards while Aden Twer caught five passes for 125 yards on the day.
Carmella completed 13-of-20 passes for 158 yards. Colin Rodgers (Jamison, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) and Todd Smolinsky (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) combined to make 10 catches for 126 yards. Wilson finished with 46 yards rushing while classmate Cedric Madden (Norristown, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) covered 55 yards.
Sophomore Teddy Airoldi (Bethlehem, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) led the defense with 12 tackles while Shane Mitchell (Whitehaven, Pa./Crestwood) recorded nine stops. First-year Kevin Sherry (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) added four tackles and a seven yard sack.
The Red Devils slip to 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the Centennial Conference. They return home for the season finale next Saturday, hosting Ursinus College at 1:00 pm.
