(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team outlasted Ursinus in one the longest games in school and Centennial Conference history, posting a 3-2 decision in 18 innings on Saturday. That was game one of a double-header. The Red Devils claimed the nightcap as well, holding on for a 7-6 decision as the game was called at the end of the eighth inning.
Five Red Devils broke Centennial Conference and school records with eight at-bats in the game. The teams combined for a remarkable 67 at-bats in the game. Remarkably, each team only used two pitchers in the opening affair.
Ryan Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) went 8.1 innings before sophomore Zee Crawford (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) came on for 9.2 innings of relief to earn the win. Kramer recorded seven strikeouts while Crawford added five while surrendering just four hits and two walks.
The game was scoreless until the seventh inning. Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) led-off with a single and scored on an RBI single from Hank Sanders (Wellesville, Pa./Northern). Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) drew a walk and came in on a wild pitch to put the Devils up, 2-0.
Sam Wachs (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) doubled in the eighth but was stranded on third. The Bears pushed two across in the bottom of the inning to knot the game, 2-2.
Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) doubled to lead-off the 18th inning of the game. Chris King (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) came on to pinch-run, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose). King came in to score on an RBI from Wachs, and the Devils dodged a double and a walk in the bottom of the inning to finally secure the win.
The teams made it through eight innings before running out of daylight. The Devils pulled even, 6-6, in the seventh inning and scored another in the eighth to complete the sweep.
Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) cleared the bases with a three-run triple to start things off in game two. Three hits and a walk led to runs from Helmandollar and Santoro to put the Devils in front, 5-0, at the end of the second inning.
Ursinus came alive in the third, tying the game with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Bears pulled in front, scoring a lone run in the bottom of the sixth to lead, 6-5.
Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) singled and came in off the bat of Helmandollar to tie the game. Wachs added another game-winning RBI in the eighth, driving in Haynes for a 7-6 lead, and the win.
Sanders went 4-for-5 in the nightcap while Haynes added two hits and three RBIs, and Helmandollar went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Tyler Clauson-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) went six innings in the start before Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came on to earn the win with two hitless innings.
The Red Devils improve to 11-17 overall and 2-7 in the Centennial Conference. They are in action again tomorrow, hosting Gettysburg College in a make-up game at 2:30 pm.
