(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team suffered another difficult setback, falling to a much improved Juniata squad on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles amassed 504 yards of offense en route to a, 37-14, win here in Carlisle.
Juniata stormed out to an early lead, taking a 27-0 advantage before junior quarterback Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) scored on a seven yard run at the end of the first half.
The Devil defense held on the opening possession, forcing the Eagles to punt. A Red Devil fumble gave Juniata the ball at the Dickinson 26 yard line. Five plays later the Eagles were on the board, scoring on a quarterback sneak by Ward Udinski at the 7:48 mark.
A fumble on the ensuing kick-off handed the ball immediately back to Juniata at the Dickinson 16 yard line. A four-play drive led to a 25-yard field-goal to stretch the lead to, 10-0.
Turnovers continued to plague the Red Devils as a Juniata interception led to a 38-yard field-goal and a 13-0 deficit for Dickinson.
The defense did a solid job in tough field position, holding the Eagles to a pair of field-goals. The Juniata offense would keep rolling, however, stretching the margin to, 27-7, at halftime.
Forcing the Devils to punt on back-to-back possessions, the Eagles capitalized with a 12-yard touchdown run from Zach McCaulley and a 20-yard scoring strike from Udinski to Hunter Phillips, at the 5:07 mark.
The teams traded punts before Ahnell would lead Dickinson on a 58-yard drive, scoring on a seven-yard run.
The Devils started the second half with a three-and-out, leading to another field-goal from Ken Kysor, this time from 36 yards away, making the score, 30-7. The Devils would answer on the next possession with another solid drive, giving the Devils some much needed confidence.
Ahnell capped a six-play drive with a beautiful pass and great catch by senior captain Todd Smolinsky (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), who dove into the end zone for the Devils' second touchdown of the day.
Juniata closed out the scoring on the next drive for the final of, 37-14. Udinksi threw for 62 yards on the drive and scored on another QB sneak with 3:55 to play in the third quarter.
Dickinson moved the ball to the Juniata five yard line to open the fourth quarter, but were stopped short, going for it on fourth-and-goal. The Eagles would bleed the clock on the next drive, draining almost nine minutes of the quarter in the process to help secure the win.
Udinksi led Juniata (2-0, 1-0 CC) with 295 yards passing, completing 22-of-33 attempts on the day. He added 53 yards rushing as well while Michael John ran for 72. Kyle Shuk covered 90 yards receiving on five catches while Isaiah Slutter added 56 yards with six receptions.
Defensively, Greg Nixon led the Eagles with a game-high 13 tackles and Charles Sweigert returned an interception 18 yards.
Jake Myers (Middletown, Del./St. Andrew's) and Michael Miller (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace) each recorded 11 tackles to lead the Red Devil defense. Connor Thompson (Jenkintown, Pa./Farther Judge) added 10 stops and assisted on a sack.
Sophomore running back Shawn Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) broke a couple of big runs, reaching the century mark with 104 yards on 14 carries. Ahnell ran for 42 yards and completed 7-of-12 passes for 93 yards.
The Red Devils slip to 0-2 on the season. They are on the road next weekend, traveling to Susquehanna University for a 1:00 pm kick-off.
