(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team had a rough start against #9-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Friday night. The Blue Jays scored on their first two possessions and took control of the game early, posting a 42-7 win to remain unbeaten on the season.
The Blue Jays scored on their first offensive play as Braden Anderson connected with Bradley Munday for a 66-yard touchdown pass with just two minutes off the clock. Hopkins found the end zone two more times in the opening quarter.
Brandon Cherry capped a five-play, 55-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run at the 9:04 mark. Anderson broke free and scored on a 23-yard run to stretch the lead to 21-0, with 1:53 remaining in the opening quarter.
Anderson found pay-dirt again late in the second quarter, scoring after a well-executed fake hand-off with just under five minutes to play in the first half.
The Red Devils had a stronger showing in the second half, holding the Blue Jays to just two touchdowns after the break. Senior captain Connor Thompson (Jenkintown, Pa./Father Judge) led the charge with two big tackles for loss in the second half.
The Red Devil special teams came up big with a blocked punt on the Hopkins' 16-yard line. Senior Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) broke through for the block and junior Chris Soulas (Far Hills, N.J./Delbarton) recovered to give Dickinson great field position.
The Devils could not seem to catch a break as Lance Hammond came up with an interception to give the ball back to the Blue Jays. They would capitalize seven plays later with their final score of the game. Will Nunn scrambled and found Kyle Morgan in the back of the end zone to stretch the lead to 42-0.
Two possessions later, the Red Devils capitalized on a Blue Jay fumble, deep in their own territory. Dickinson took over the Hopkins' 18-yard line as junior David Chow (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) fell on the loose ball.
First-year quarterback Ricky Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) came on and scored on a 14-yard run to put the Devils on the scoreboard.
The Red Devils finished the game strong behind a great effort from first-year Lex Lauletta (Woodstock, Ga./Sequoyah). Lauletta broke for a 43-yard run and added two more carries for 14 yards, taking the ball to the Blue Jay one-yard line.
The Blue Jays forced a fumble and recovered on the four yard line. They would run out the final 2:51 to improve to 6-0 on the year.
Stuart Walters led Hopkins with 78 yards rushing while Anderson covered 64 yards and scored twice on the ground. Anderson completed 9-of-18 passes for 171 yards and two more TDs while Brandon Cherry added 48 yards rushing.
Quinn Donaldson and Bradley Munday combined for six catches, covering 159 yards. Keith Corliss led the defense with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Lauletta finished as the Red Devils' top rusher, covering 65 yards on just four carries. Cedric Madden (Norristown, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) added 44 yards rushing while Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and Jake Meluskey (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) ran for 38 and 35 yards, respectively.
Thompson tallied nine tackles on the night while Ned Emala (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) made eight stops. Chow added a sack to his fumble recovery and senior captain Walker Moriarty (Snowmass Village, Colo./Aspen) recorded a sack as well.
Junior punter Austin High (Wilmington, Del./Archmere) averaged 40.0 yards on seven kicks with a long of 50 on the night.
The Red Devils slip to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road next weekend, traveling to McDaniel College for a 1:00 pm start.
