Soulas, Madden Carry Devils Past McDaniel 33-28

Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson football team outlasted McDaniel College, 33-28, on Saturday afternoon as the Red Devils rushed for 310 yards on the day.

 

Junior fullback Chris Soulas (Far Hills, N.J./Delbarton) had a huge afternoon, rushing for a game-high 158 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Red Devil attack. Classmate Cedric Madden (Norristown, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) had a great game as well, covering 122 yards and adding a touchdown.

 

Sophomore Matt Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle), son of Dickinson defensive coordinator Joel Quattrone had a big day for the Green Terror, recording a game-high 11 tackles, including seven solo stops and a forced fumble.

 

McDaniel struck first, scoring on a 79-yard touchdown pass from Matty Callahan to Nick O'Melia with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter.

 

The Red Devils countered almost immediately as Soulas scored his first of the day on a 32 yard run with just 21 seconds on the clock.

 

Quattrone's forced fumble came on the next possession, leading to another touchdown for O'Melia, putting the Green Terror up, 14-7. Dickinson answered on its next possession once again, as Soulas found pay-dirt from 13 yards out.

 

The teams traded punts back-and-forth to close out the half with the scored tied, 14-14.

 

Dickinson took the lead on its third drive of the second half after senior captain Connor Thompson (Jenkintown, Pa./Father Judge) returned an interception to the McDaniel nine yard line.

 

Madden fumbled into the end zone and senior Devin Gaby (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) recovered for the touchdown. The extra-point failed, making the score, 20-14, with 8:18 to play in the quarter.

 

Pat Schlecker (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) then intercepted Callahan and gave Dickinson great field position on the McDaniel 36 yard line.

 

The Red Devils would capitalize as Jake Meluskey (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) threw a halfback pass to Gaby at the Green Terror six yard line. Madden would cap the drive from one yard out to put the Devils up, 27-14.

 

McDaniel put together an eight-play, 65-yard scoring drive to cut the deficit to 27-21, with 2:04 to play in the third quarter.

 

The teams traded possessions to open the fourth quarter before the Devils scored at the 5:35 mark to gain some breathing room. Madden and Soulas combined for 57 yards on the drive with Soulas crossing the goal line on a four-yard dive for a 33-21 lead.

 

Callahan tried to keep the Terror in striking distance, driving 85 yards and hitting Sean Montgomery for a 21-yard touchdown with 2:46 remaining in the game.

 

The Red Devils recovered the on-side kick attempt, leading 33-28. They were able to run the clock down to 1:43 before having to punt the ball away.

 

After a McDaniel first-down the Devil defense held, forcing four straight incomplete passes to take possession and run out the clock.

 

The Red Devils rushed for 310 yards on the day, led by Soulas and Madden with 158 and 122, respectively. Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) added 93 yards passing while Anders Overhaug (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) caught two passes for 69 yards on the day.

 

Sophomore Kevin Sherry (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) led the defensive effort with 10 tackles, including a pair of sacks. Teddy Airoldi (Bethlehem, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) added eight tackles while Ethan Rayner (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) recorded a pair of sacks as well.

 

First-year Kevin Ioannidis (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and junior Mark Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) combined for 13 tackles and three pass break-ups.

 

Sophomore James Ward (Hatfield, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) returned two kick-offs for 58 yards and senior Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) had a 43-yard punt return.

 

Callahan completed 23-of-41 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns for McDaniel. O'Melia finished with six catches for 105 yards receiving to go with his two scores.

 

The Red Devils improve to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference. They return home next weekend to host Muhlenberg College at 1:00 pm.
