(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team swept a Centennial Conference double-header from visiting Ursinus College. The Red Devils used a pair of solid pitching performances to claim a 3-1 decision and a 5-0 shutout, in the nightcap.
Senior Ryan Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) went the distance to win the opener. He scattered just three hits will recording eight strikeouts on the afternoon. Junior Harley Moore (Deltaville, Va./Middlesex) tossed a four-hit shutout, recording 13 strikeouts as he improves to 4-0 on the season.
Kramer had a strong start, facing just 14 batters in the first four innings. The Bears used a walk, sacrifice bunt and a base-hit to put a run on the board in the top of the fifth inning.
The Red Devils answered with a pair in the bottom of the sixth. Mark Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) drew a one-out walk and Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) singled to set up a two-run double by junior Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) to put Dickinson in front, 2-1.
Werner reached on a single in the eighth inning and pinch-runner Conor Foote (Narberth, Pa./Lower Marion) came in to score an insurance run on a wild pitch.
Kramer recorded three straight outs to close out the game as the Devils claimed game one.
Moore had a strong start as well, booking six strikeouts in the first three innings. Senior Hank Sanders (Wellsville, Pa./Northern) singled and stole second in the second. He moved to third on a single by first-year Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp./Holy Spirit).
Brian McCloud (Medfield, N.J./Medfield) singled to score Sanders and Foote reached on an error as Hopkins came in to make the score, 2-0.
Back-to-back singles from Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) led to a two-RBI single from Werner to stretch the Devil advantage to 4-0, in the fifth inning.
Helmandollar and Haynes combined again in the seventh as Helmandollar singled and came around on a double from Haynes for the final of 5-0.
Werner had a great day, going 3-for-4 in game one, and 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the nightcap.
The Red Devils improve to 18-6 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference. They are scheduled to return to Haverford College on Sunday to make-up the second game of a double-header from April 5th. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
