(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson baseball team went from high to low on Saturday, splitting a Centennial Conference double-header at Washington College on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils needed to run the table to make the playoffs, and took a step closer with a thrilling 9-8 win in the opener. The nightcap went the other way as the Shoremen scored in the bottom of the ninth to claim game two by the identical score, 9-8.
Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) hit a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Devils on the board. Washington answered with a solo homerun, and scored another to tie the game in the bottom of the first.
A triple and a single led to another Shoremen run in the third, putting Washington in front, 3-2. Hank Sanders (Wellsville, Pa./Northern) drove in two runs and scored to highlight a three-run inning for Dickinson in the fourth.
Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp./Holy Spirit) drove in a run in the fourth, and added another RBI in the fifth to give the Devils a 7-3 advantage.
Washington came back with two runs in the seventh to keep things interesting. Hopkins came up big once again, launching a two-run homer in the ninth to make the score, 9-5.
The Shoremen tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs before Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) recorded his fourth strikeout to end the game.
Hopkins went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the opener. Harley Moore (Deltaville, Va./Middlesex) improved to 6-0 on the season with the win. He tallied six strikeouts in six innings. Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) came on in relief before Acosta earned the save.
Washington jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning of the nightcap, and stretched the lead to 8-1, scoring four on a grand slam homerun by Mike Acampora.
Sanders doubled in two runs in the eighth as the Devils scored six runs to pull within one. Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) tied the game with a double in the ninth inning, scoring pinch-runner Will Glancy (Glen Ridge, N.J./St. Peter's Prep).
Washington started the ninth with a lead-off double and capitalized on a wild pitch. The Devils were forced into a pair of intentional walks in the inning, and Brian Alexa singled in the winning run to end the Devils' playoff hopes.
Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Mike Adams went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn/Ridgefield) and Brian McCloud (Medfield, N.J./Medfield) each added two hits as well.
The Red Devils move to 21-12-1 overall and 7-9-1 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Johns Hopkins on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
