Box Score
(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson football team turned in a solid performance despite a 34-7 setback at #9-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Friday night.
The Red Devils had a strong start, producing three first downs on their opening drive before facing fourth down at the 34 yard line and punting to the Hopkins' 18.
Hopkins was forced to punt but capitalized on an interception to strike first, scoring on their second drive of the game. Bradley Munday caught a 35 yard touchdown pass from Jon Germano.
The Devils made a big stop on the next possession after Hopkins took over on the Dickinson 49 yard line. The Blue Jays came up short on third down, and on a 27-yard field-goal attempt.
The Blue Jays tacked on a 16 yard touchdown pass to Brandon Cherry with 11:21 remaining in the first quarter.
Hopkins quickly added another score after Jack Toner picked-off a pass at the 48 yard line and returned the ball to the Dickinson 12. Stuart Walters plunged in from three yards out but the extra-point failed, holding the score at 20-0, with just over nine minutes to play in the half.
Germano tossed another scoring strike, hitting Boone Lewis from 24 yards out to stretch the lead to 27-0, with 3:36 remaining in the half.
Dickinson looked to find the end zone before the half as first-year quarterback Billy Burger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) connected with tight end Darrion Bunce (Kelowa, B.C./The Gunnery, Conn.) for a quick 13 yard gain. The Blue Jays would hold but be forced to take a knee as senior punter Austin High (Wilmington, Del./Archmere) dropped the ball on the two yard line.
Hopkins went up 34-0, just 21 seconds into the second half, scoring on a 72 yard touchdown pass from Germano to Munday.
The Blue Jays held on the Devils' next possession but High pinned Hopkins on their own four yard line. Hopkins made some progress before a big sack from senior Jake Myers (Middletown, Del./St. Andrew's) forced a punt.
Senior David Chow (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) broke through the line for a big 11 yard sack, forcing a Hopkins field-goal attempt. The kick went wide as the Red Devil special teams unit came up big once again.
Burger broke free for a nice run to start the next possession, putting Dickinson at midfield. The drive was stalled, bringing on High for his eighth punt of the game. He put Hopkins on their own 18, but a big play quickly moved the Blue Jays to the 44 yard line.
A bad snap and a well-timed blitz led to a sack for junior Ned Emala (Baltimore, Md./Gilman). On the next play, more pressure led to an interception from Jack Margavitch (York, Pa./Dallastown) at the Dickinson 29 yard line.
The teams traded punts into the fourth quarter. The game remained scoreless as the Dickinson defense was able to neutralize the Hopkins for the remainder of the second half.
The Red Devils spoiled the shutout at the 1:40 mark of the fourth quarter as first-year John McAllister (Darien, Conn./King Low Haywood Thomas) broke through the line and scored on a 43 yard touchdown run.
Germano threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns as Hopkins improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference. Keith Corliss led the defense with 10 tackles and a pair of sacks.
