(Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team dropped a pair of games at Franklin & Marshall, falling 3-1 in the opener and 6-4 in the nightcap.
The Diplomats scored lone runs in the second fourth and sixth in game one. A lead-off single by Mike Smerglio in the second led to an RBI double for Christopher Vincent. Smerglio reached on an error and stole second in the fourth. He came around to score on a single from Dan Marano.
The Diplomats capitalized on a lead-off error in the sixth as Luke Seib scored on an RBI by David Iacobucci to put stretch the lead to 3-0.
The Red Devils had a runner on third in the sixth, and runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth, but were unable to cut into the deficit. They broke through in the top of the ninth after a lead-off single from Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield). He came in to score as Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) singled and advanced on an error.
Andrew Mascis was able to record the final two outs and earn the save. Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) suffered the loss, despite a solid effort on the mind. He scattered six hits, allowing just two earned runs and two walks.
Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./Bullis) went 2-for-3 on the day as well.
Iacobucci doubled in the second of game two and put F&M on the board on a double-steal, after Matt Mazanzky singled. The Diplomats tacked on three in the sixth behind a lead-off error and three straight hits. Seib doubled in a run before Smerglio and Iacobucci added RBIs with a single and sac fly.
The Red Devils looked to rally once again, scoring three runs in the seventh. Werner reached on a mishandled strikeout and came in on a double from Hopkins. Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Friends) had a clutch pinch-hit, driving in a run on a fielder's choice. Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./Pennington School) came on to pinch-run, stealing second and scoring on a single by Dolan.
The Diplomats countered with two runs in the eighth to stretch the margin to 5-3. The Devils tacked on another in the ninth, but the Diplomats would hold to complete the sweep.
Tyler Clauson-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) took the loss in game two. He had a solid outing as well, allowing just one earned run and three hits in five innings of work.
Dolan added another 2-for-4 performance with an RBI. Hopkins went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI double while Werner scored twice in the nightcap.
The Red Devils slip to 10-19-1 overall and 4-9-1 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Muhlenberg College on Tuesday. Opening pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
