(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team dropped a heartbreaker in Allentown, falling, 13-12, to host Muhlenberg as the Mules scored in the bottom of the eighth to escape with the win. The Red Devils rallied for a thrilling 6-5 win on Tuesday, but were unable to recreate the magic on Friday.
The slugfest began in the top of the first inning as the Red Devils opened with four runs, right out of the gate. Muhlenberg answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning before the Devils tallied two more in the top of the second.
Sophomore Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) led-off the game with a double and immediately scored on a single by Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Friends).
Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) doubled and Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) walked to load the bases. Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) hit into an error that resulted in three runs coming across as all three were moving on contact with two outs, putting the Devils up, 4-0.
John Icaza hit a three-run homer to cut the deficit to one, in the bottom of the first. The Devils responded in the top of the second as Dolan was hit by a pitch and Nardin drew a walk. That led to a pair of RBIs as Werner doubled for the second time in the game.
Brett Rosen singled and would come in on sacrifice fly by Icaza for his fourth RBI on the day. Nick Plinio went over the left field wall with a two-run shot to knot the game, 6-6.
Dickinson regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back walks and an error led to a run for Nardin before Haynes hit a sacrifice fly to score Werner for an 8-6 advantage. DeVivo bunted his way on, scoring Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy).
Muhlenberg used the long ball to pull in front 10-9, as Icaza hit another homerun, this time a two-run pop, while Plinio added a two-run homer to put the Mules on top. Werner singled and Haynes countered with a two-run bomb to put the Devils in front, 11-10. DeVivo went the other way with a solo shot to right field to add another.
Icaza launched another two-run shot, recording his eighth RBI of the game.
Besse singled and stole second before Dolan did the same to put runners in second and third in the top of the seventh. Andrew Oakes came back with three straight strikeouts to escape the jam. Jimmy Cody singled and advanced on a wild pitch to set up the game-winning RBI for Kennedy as Muhlenberg scored and held on in the top of the ninth.
The Red Devils loaded the bases in the top of the ninth after the Mules went to closer Phillip Balsecca. Besse singled and Dolan beat out a sacrifice bunt before Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College) reached on muffed throw, on another sac bunt attempt. The Mules came home to get Besse on a force play to keep the slim one run lead.
Balseco closed out the inning for the save, recording a strikeout and a ground out as the Red Devils drop the 31-hit affair in a heartbreaker, 13-12.
Werner went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs while DeVivo went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Dolan and Besse each added three hits while Nardin scored three runs, drawing a pair of walks.
The Red Devils slip to 11-21-1 overall and 5-10-1 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to close out the conference schedule in a double-header with visiting Washington College at 12:30 pm. Les Poolman is scheduled to throw out the first pitch as part of Red & White Day.
