(Hilton Head, S.C.) – The Dickinson men's tennis team opened spring break against Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis, suffering a 7-0 setback to the Jaguars. In the seven-point format, doubles are counted as one point for the three flights. They bounced back with a 7-2 victory over Endicott College on Tuesday to capture their first win of the spring season.
The Red Devils did claim the top doubles match against IUPUI with senior Joey Frank (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Boca Raton) and junior Steven Kaplan (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) defeating Bradley Luetschwager and Jose Calero, 8-5.
Samuel Loring (New York, N.Y./Blair Academy) and Shawn Diniz (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) battled in the third doubles flight, falling 8-5. They both turned in strong matches in the fifth and sixth singles flights as well.
The Red Devils returned to the courts on Tuesday morning and had a strong showing against Endicott. Dickinson swept the doubles matches, highlighted by an 8-2 win in the second flight by first-year Derek Chen (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Cranberry) and senior Evan Davis (Westport, Conn./Staples).
Frank moved into the top singles flight, winning a (6-4, 6-4) decision. Davis earned the win in the fourth flight with Diniz and Loring claiming straight set wins in the fifth and sixth for the second straight day.
Frank and Kaplan survived an 8-6 match in doubles while Diniz and Loring won the third flight, 8-4.
The Red Devils are off on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday with a, 11:30 am match against Asbury University.
