Softball Opens Break With Three Games on Monday

(Tucson, Ariz.) – The Dickinson softball team started its spring break schedule with three games on Monday after rain postponed play on Sunday.

The Red Devils suffered a 7-3 setback to Transylvania University and split a double-header with the University of Pitt-Bradford, falling 8-2 before winning the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.

Transylvania pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI single from Annie Schuck. The Red Devils countered with one in the bottom half of the inning.

Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./William Penn Charter) doubled to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position on a single from first-year Devon Kueny (Ewing, N.J./Ewing). That set up an RBI single from junior Julie Siecinski (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) as Gutpelet came around to score.

The Pioneers added one in the second and scored three in the fourth to stretch the lead to 6-1. The Red Devils combined for four hits in the sixth inning, scoring twice as Hannah Seburn (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) drove in Kueny and stole home on a double steal to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Transylvania tacked on a run in the top of the seventh for the final of 7-3.

Kuney and Seicinksi led the way at the plate, each going 2-for-3.

Pitt-Bradford took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning and pushed across four in the second.

The Red Devils answered with lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Kristen Acocella (Reading, Conn./Joel Barlow) led off the fourth with a walk and came around to score on a single from Lindsey Keller (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken).

In the fifth, Kueny singled, stole second and moved to third on an error off the bat of Maggie McConney (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford). Kueny came across on another Panther error to cut the lead to 5-2.

Pitt-Bradford would tally three more runs in the sixth inning for the final of 8-2.

Kueny and Seburn finished 2-for-4 at the plate and first-year Lindsay Kucker (Ewing, N.J./Lawrenceville School) recorded nine strikeouts in a six-inning effort.

The Red Devils turned the tables in the nightcap, scoring twice in the bottom of the second to jump out to an early lead.

Acocella singled and scored on an RBI double from Paige Hahn (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) to put Dickinson on the board and Marissa Fabbo (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham & Munson) singled to drive in Hahn for a 2-0 advantage.

Fabbo added another RBI double to stretch the margin to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. The Panthers put a run on the board in the fifth, but Dickinson would counter with two in the bottom half of the inning to lead 5-1.

Alissa Lema (Lutherville, Md./Towson) led off the inning with a single and came in to score along with Seburn as Keller reached on an error.

The Red Devils erupted for four runs in the sixth inning to end the game, 9-1. First-year Jen Klepfer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) started things off with a homerun before Seburn drew a bases-loaded walk to stretch the margin to 7-1.

Acocella followed up with a single to drive in two more for the eight-run rule.

Lema went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Acocella and Fabbo each went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Klepfer finished 2-for-3 as well Kueny added a hit for the third straight game.

The Red Devils return to action on Tuesday, facing #5-ranked Illinois Wesleyan and Emory University.
