Big Second Inning Helps Devils to Earn Split with Eagles

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team used a pair of two-run base hits from Jessie Sandusky and Aubrey Gilbert in the second inning of game two of Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader with Juniata College to secure a split with the Eagles at Dickinson Park. The visitors claimed a 3-1 victory in game one, before the Red and White responded with a 4-1 triumph during the night cap.

Game One
Final Score:
Eagles 3, DEVILS 1
Team Records: Dickinson (5-9) | Juniata (12-13)
Pitching Decision: W - Cheyenne Silvis (8-5) | L - Abby Kohan (2-3)
Inside the Game
  • Both starting pitchers Cheyenne Silvis and Abby Kohan were strong in the first as both went "three-up, three-down".
  • Then, in the top of the second a single for Cailee Barnett was followed by back-to-back ground outs to push her to third. Ashley Robuck provided an RBI single and then Brooklynn Walker pushed it to 2-0 on an RBI triple. Gilbert notched a one-out base hit during the home-half, but consecutive strikeouts retired the side.
  • A quiet third gave way to the fourth where a double Lexi Roush and single from Robuck made the lead 3-0. That ended the day in the circle for Kohan as Emory Hadden took over and allowed no more damage. Unfortunately, for the Devils, Silvis put down the three she faced in the bottom-half.
  • The game stayed that way until the last of the seventh as Lauren Routzahn started things off with a double. Bea Taormino then entered the game as a pinch-runner and came around to score when Gilbert ripped a single to center. Dickinson would not be able to get any closer as a strikeout and ground out ended the game.

Pitching Decision: W - Skye Cooke (2-1) | L - Maddy Detz (1-5) | S - Kaylie Renner (1)
Inside the Game
  • Each team had a runner reach in the first against starting pitchers Skye Cooke and Maddy Detz, but was able to get beyond second.
  • Dickinson would open the scoring during the last of the second all with two down as a double for Aubrey Coyle and walks to both Jackie Adler and Elizabeth Raefski filled the cushions for Sandusky. She made it 2-0 by poking a 3-1 offering to center field, before Gilbert cleared the bags with a two-run triple sending the advantage to 4-0 entering the third.
  • Unfortunately, for the Devils they were not able to post a shutdown frame as a single for Maryn Swank set the stage for Grace Hensch to deliver a two-out RBI double into left-center cutting the gap to 4-1. Dickinson tried to add onto their advantage in the home-half with singles for Amelia Plescia and Kohan giving the Red and White two runners, but a pair of strikeouts stalled any rally.
  • The rest of the game belonged to the Devils pitching staff as Erin McMahon took over in the circle to open up the fourth and retired the next nine of ten batters she faced to carry the 4-1 advantage into "last call". She handed the ball off to Renner in the seventh and retired the Eagles one-two-three to end the game.
