Devils Drop Both Ends of Tri-Match

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team battled all day, but dropped a pair of matches on Saturday in their home tri-match on Senior Day at the Kline Center. First, the Red and White fell short in a Centennial Conference against Swarthmore College 1-3, before dropping a 0-3 decision to Susquehanna University.

Before the matches kicked off the Devils honored their lone senior Brissa Black.

Match One - Garnet 3, DEVILS 1 (25-23, 21-25, 30-32, 12-25)
Swarthmore began the first strong taking a 5-1 lead, before trading the next eight points with Emma Lange recording three kills to leave the score at 9-5. Cassidy Davis, Sophia Denayer, Amelia Kim, and Emma Popham answered back with a 6-1 run to go on top 11-10. Dickinson continued to hold the visitors at bay with Alexa Barowski joining Denayer, Lange, and Popham to open the margin up to 22-18. The Garnet fought back through Angelina Heminway, Chloe Mayhue, and Kaylee Zhang trimming it down to 24-23. However, Lange pounded down another kill to end the first 25-23.

Things were nip-and-tuck early in the second with Barowski, Davis, Kim, and Popham scoring for the Devils to hold the score at 6-6. A kill by Lange gave DC an 8-7 lead, before Swat responded with a 4-1 charge with Mayhue and Zhang posting points. Once again Dickinson had an answer with a 9-4 run thanks to Barowski, Denayer, Kim, and Lange making it 18-16. The visitors then flipped the script on the home team with Zhang recording six kills during a 9-3 rampage to close the set 25-21.

The Red and White were flying to begin the third as Barowski, Kim, Lange, and Popham all recording kills to take an 8-3 edge. Jordan Perry joined Mayhue and Zhang on a 7-2 charge to draw level at 10-10. DC took five of the next six thanks to Barowski, Davis, and Popham to go back ahead 15-11. After the Garnet got four of the ensuing six, the Devils took advantage of three Swat errors and kills by Kim and Lange to move within a point of the set at 24-18. Unfortunately, the guests ripped off six straight to tie the score at 24-24. Each team would stave off game-ending points multiple times all the way out 30-30, before the Garnet grabbed two in a row for the 32-30 win.

The two sides shared the opening dozen points of the fourth with Barowski Davis, and Lange each notching a kill. A 10-2 rampage for the Garnet opened up a 16-8 advantage, before a Popham kill and Swat error stalled the charge for a moment at 16-10. However, Kim and Lang recorded the only other two Dickinson points as the visitors ended on a 9-2 run to take the set 25-12.

Match Two - River Hawks 3, DEVILS 1 (24-26, 14-25, 16-25)
Dickinson began the match strong with Davis, Kim, and Popham recording kills during an 8-4 run. Susquehanna came back with kills from Rosina Esposito and Ryan Rorls to cut the deficit down to 10-8. Barowski, Lange, and Popham came back with a 7-2 response to extend the margin to 17-10. Kills for Megan Currie, Emily Kowalski, and Esposito brought the visitors back to within one 19-18. Kills by Barowski, Denayer, and Lange were not enough to prevent the River Hawks from coming all the way back to take the set 26-24.

A pair of Popham kills and a solo by Lange helped DC to hold the early lead once again at 7-6, but two Rorls scores capped a 4-0 SU run for a 10-7 advantage. Three straight Hawk miscues tied the score, but also seemed to wake them up as Kody Dillon, Esposito and Rorls embarked on a 10-1 stampede making it 20-11. Kills by Kim and Popham slowed the roll for just a moment as the visitors claimed the 25-14 win.

An ace from Dofiles began the third, but then Faith Shaffer, Dillon, Esposito, and Rorls led an 8-1 charge. Kills by Denayer, Kim, and Lange gave the Red and White three of the next four points, before an 8-2 answer from the Hawks ending on a Shaffer ace made it 17-7. Dickinson showed some fight back as Mathilde Verbitsky and Dofiles found the scoresheet during a 7-3 run cutting the deficit to 20-14. However, five of the next seven would belong to Susquehanna allowing them to close out the match with a 25-16 victory.
