CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Dickinson women's soccer team got a 61st minute goal from
Lauren Bracken to not only earn a 1-0 road shutout over Washington College, but secure the second seed and first-round bye in next week's Centennial Conference tournament.
Dickinson had the first two shots of the opening 25 minutes as
Meg Tate missed to either side of Hailey Sharpe. The home side responded with the next two attempts when Audrey Flanagan fired wide right of
Sophia Kavulich in the 30th-minute, before Maddy Gaydon let a shot go outside of the target during minute 34. The final eleven minutes of the half would see neither side work themselves into position for a shot which sent the match to the break at 0-0.Â
Washington recorded the first shot of the second period with 4:14 off the clock when Gillian Slavick got loose for a header in the box off a corner. However, Kavulich was there for the Red and White to keep things scoreless. The next attempt towards goal would be the only one that mattered when
Katie Vassilakos played a corner into
Charlotte Glancey that was flicked off her head to Bracken who buried it from six-yards out. In the 64th it was the Shorewomen looking to level the score, but Rachel Chatfield missed to the right of goal. Shots by
Emma Cooney and Bracken were unable to Sharpe again holding the score at 1-0 into the 74th. The hosts would get their last look at goal during the 75th minute, however Bridget Whiteside was unable to steer her attempt on frame. Dickinson tried to put things away a minute later, unfortunately, Sharpe was able to deny Tate and
Maddie St. Amand rang the woodwork. The Devils were able to lock things up over the final ten minutes to see out the 1-0 win. Â
