CARLISLE, Pa. - Senior
Lauren Bracken provided the eventual game-winner at the 4:05 mark of the first overtime period after classmate
Charlotte Glancey tallied the tying marker in the 74th-minute, to help the second-seeded Dickinson women's soccer team book a spot in Sunday's Centennial Conference Championship match with a 2-1 overtime victory over third-seeded Swarthmore College at Miller Memorial Field.
The visitors applied the early pressure with Eloise Franz forcing a stop out of
Sophia Kavulich in the fourth minute. Dickinson came back with the next two attempts as
Katie Vassilakos was denied by Lillian Keller, before
Meg Tate fired wide right during the 14th. Swarthmore did eventually find the breakthrough four minutes later when a foul commited by
Georgia Mantione led to a free-kick opportunity for the Garnet. Alice Onyango-Opiyo stepped into the shot from about 25-yards away sent a curling ball into the upper corner past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. The guests stayed on the attack as Abby Chang was stopped, prior to Amelia Mounts and Onyango-Opiyo both missing the target. The Red and White had a chance at the equalizer with just under three minutes left, but
Allie Charnas sent the offering just high to send the match to the half at 1-0.
It would take ten minutes into the second period before either side would get a look at goal when Glancey missed high off a corner. That was followed by blasts from
Sarah Cudmore and Tate each going high keeping it at 1-0 into the final half-hour. Swarthmore stopped the Devils momentum for a brief moment as Kim Kockenmeister got in the box for a shot that was snuffed out by the defense. That led to the Red and White getting a transition opportunity in the 64th when
Maddie St. Amand was stopped by Keller, before she also said no to
Lila Brown on the ensuing rebound. Dickinson finally got rewarded for their relentless pursuit in the 74th-minute as a save by Keller on Tate led to a corner kick. Vassilakos stepped up and swung the ball into the box that deflected off the head of Brown to the feet of Glancey who pushed the shot just past Keller for the 1-1 tie. Each team had one more shot, unfortunately neither one bothered a keeper.
Enjoy Glancey's Equalizer!
Dickinson would record the only three shots of the first extra time period as Vassilakos missed wide right in the 93rd, before a minute later Tate slid a pass to Bracken on the left-wing who let a shot fly that hit Keller in the hands, unfortunately for the Garnet it went off her and into the net for the 2-1 Devils lead after the first ten minutes.
Bracken's Game-Winner!
Swarthmore had two opportunities from Kockenmeister over the final ten minutes, however, none of them came close to testing Kavulich which led to this outcome.
