Box Score 2 CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team was plagued by slow starts in both games on Saturday as the visiting Swarthmore College Garnet swept the Red and White by scores of 7-0 and 5-2 at MacPhail Field.
Game One - Swarthmore 7, DEVILS 0
Pitching Decision
W - Edward Berry (2-3) | L - Thomas Marshman (2-4)
Inside the Game
Swarthmore was out of the blocks quick against Marshman as hits for Luke Mutz and Austin Burgess put men on the corners for Michael Sepe who produced an RBI groundout. Dickinson was unable to answer versus Berry as he setdown Kenny Tagliareni, Lukas Atsalis, and Andrew Mazzone.
The Garnet added one in the fourth when Paul Cooke singled, before being driven by Kirk Terada-Herzer for a 2-0 edge. The Red and White tried to answer back with a double from Cole Hare along with a knock for Tom Gannaway putting men at second and third for Luke Jackson. Unfortunately, he watched strike three go by to end the threat.
After a scoreless fifth the visitors tacked on a single marker in the sixth as an error and hit batter resulting in an RBI two-bagger for Cooke with one out. That was the end of the day for Marshman as Matt Spind took over on the hill. He retired two of the next three hitters to prevent any further damage. Swat closed out the game by adding one each in the seventh, eighth, and ninth. First, Burgess produced an RBI triple (and scored on an error) after Mutz singled. Mutz then came up with the RBI hit to score Andrew Olsen who doubled, and finally, Terada-Herzer reached on a fielder's choice allowing a runner to score on an error by the Devils to extend the margin to 7-0.
Dickinson went down in order during the home-half of the ninth to end the game.
Game Two - Swarthmore 5, DEVILS 2
Pitching Decision
W - Jeremy Jensen (4-0) | L - Ethan Hamilton (3-3) | S - Zach Camp (2)
Inside the Game
For the second straight game, Swarthmore began things quick as they touched up Hamilton for three in the first. Mutz and Burgess recorded base knocks before Sepe drove in one with an infield single. He was then followed by Matthew Silvestre who smacked one to left field scoring one more, before two batters later Nate Jbara plated one more for a 3-0 lead. Jensen did exactly what he needed to do when the Devils came up setting down the Red and White in order. Swat added another one during the fourth as a single and a fielding miscue put men on the corners for Max Roffwarg. He would draw a walk and on ball four the pitch evaded the catcher allowing the run to score.
After both teams were put away in order in the fifth the Garnet tacked on one more during the sixth. A walk to Cooke meant the end of the afternoon for Hamilton as Joey Sangiuolo took over in relief. His first opponent was Terada-Herzer during the ab Cooke would steal two bases and ultimately score on a Devils miscue extending the margin to 5-0. Dickinson chipped away by one in the bottom-half with Tyler Scaff being hit by a pitch and driven in by a double off the stick of Tagliareni.
Tagliareni then started off the last of the eighth with an infield knock and then moved up to second when Atsalis reached on an error. Andrew Mazzone had a chance to drive home two but went down on strikes. However, with Cole Hare at the dish, both runners stole a bag with Tagliareni coming home on an error by the second baseman pulling within 5-2 heading to the ninth.
Beau Dana was able to keep the deficit right where it was by putting away Roffwarg, Mutz, and Burgess in order to give his teammates an opportunity with their last chance. Unfortunately, Zach Camp got a strikeout of Sam Glavin and groundouts from both Jackson as well as Chase Weller to wrap up the sweep for the visitors.
