Box Score 2 HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team began their Centennial Conference slate with a doubleheader split on Saturday against the host Haverford College Fords at Kannerstein Field. The Red and White picked up a 3-1 win in game one, before dropping the second contest 11-4.
Game One - DEVILS 3, Haverford 1
Pitching Decision
W - Ethan Hamilton (3-1) | L - Mike Rabayda (2-3) | S - Beau Dana (1)
Inside the Game
Dickinson plated the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when Cole Hare blasted the Mike Rabayda offering over the fence for the 1-0 lead. Luke Jackson followed with a single, but nothing would come of it. Ethan Hamilton would hit Zach Becker to start the home-half before the pitcher settled down and got the next three hitters.
The Devils made it 2-0 an inning later as Kenny Tagliareni reached on an error before Lukas Atsalis smashed a double to center to drive in the run.
Haverford threatened during the fourth with a single and an error put two one with one out, but Hamilton got Zach Landry and Anthony Runfola on strikes to allow no damage.
A single for Atsalis and a hit batter led to an Andrew Mazzone base hit which appeared to load the bases. However, an error by the Fords center fielder allowed Tagliareni to scamper home for the 3-0 edge after five.
With two away in the top of the seventh DC would have the bases full after singles by Tom Gannaway and Mazzone coupled with a walk to Matt Torres. Unfortunately, Ryan Thompson watched strike three to retire the side. A leadoff two-bagger for Zach Crampton signaled the end of the day for Hamilton as he was replaced by Brian Riley. He allowed a base hit to Jack Wallis to plate the runner cutting it to 3-1 through seven.
In the ninth Beau Dana took over on the mound trying to lock down the win. He allowed a walk, hit a batter, and uncorked a wild pitch to put two in scoring position with just one out. However, he calmed down and got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Game Two - Haverford 11, DEVILS 4
Pitching Decision
W - Martin Matsumura (1-2) | L - Thomas Marshman (2-2)
Inside the Game
Dickinson came out on fire against Matsumura as Tagliareni was hit by a pitch, Mazzone singled, and Jackson walked to load the bases with two gone for Torres. He stepped in and smoked a double to deep center to drive in all three. However, in the bottom-half Haverford struck for four as three hits, two errors, and a wild pitch allowed the runners to score.
The Fords added another one in the second as Harry Genth went yard.
DC loaded the bases with two away in the fourth, but Hare struck out swinging to retire the side. Two singles in the bottom-half led to an RBI knock to left for Kendrick Curry II. Then two batters later an infield single for Buck resulted in an errant throw by the Dickinson infield allowing a runner to score for a 7-3 edge through four. The Fords bumped the lead to 9-3 an inning later as Landry was hit with one out, before two batters later when Crampton belted a two-run shot over the left-center field wall. Haverford added another one during the sixth thanks to two walks, a wild pitch, and an error.
Both teams would score one more time with Haverford getting doubles from Curry II and Buck to drive in one, while the Red and White got a bases-loaded walk from Gannaway to plate Hare who singled earlier in the frame for the 11-4 final.
