Fayyaz Wins Plate Silver Medal at 2022 Commonwealth Games

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom - Dickinson was showcased on a global stage over the past couple of weeks as Red Devil women's squash junior Amna Fayyaz represented her homeland of Pakistan at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom from July 28th to August 8th.

The Commonwealth Games are an international competition that takes place every four years among the 54 countries that make up the Commonwealth of Nations, which is comprised of 54 members. However, 72 teams are allowed to participate in the event as numerous dependent territories are allowed to compete under their own flag.

Fayyaz, who is currently the top-ranked player in Pakistan took part in both the women's singles and women's doubles events.

In the singles competition she began with a matchup with Rachel Arnold of Maylasia in the Round of 32. Unfortunately for Fayyaz she dropped a 3-0 decision which moved her into the Plate bracket. She rebounded nicely there by blanking Charlotte Knaggs from Trinidad and Tobago in the Quarterfinals with game wins of 11-7, 11-4, and 11-5. That set her up for a showdown with Mary Fung-A-Fat out of Guyana in the Plate Semifinal. Fayyaz earned an 11-6 win in the first game, before dropping the next two 5-11 and 8-11. Facing a “do or die” game Fayyaz responded in a big way with a 12-10 victory to even things at 2-2, but fell just shy in the fifth 9-11.

Her attention then shifted to doubles with her partner Faiza Zafar and their first match in the Round of 16 against the Malyasian duo of Aifa Azman and Arnold. The pair battled hard all match, but came up just short dropping a 2-0 decision shifting the pair to the Plate bracket. Fayyaz and Zafar found their groove in the Quarterfinal knocking off the team of Yeheni Kuruppu and Chanithma Sinaly by a score of 2-1. The next matchup came versus Nicole Bunyan and Hollie Naughton from Canada. The four ladies played a tightly contested match with Fayyaz and Zafar coming out on top 2-0 (11-10, 11-8). That exciting victory brought on the Australian pair of Alex Haydon and Jess Turnbull in the Plate final, unfortunately the Pakistan team fell 2-0 which earned them a very impressive silver medal.

It has been such an amazing experience, finishing Top 17 out of 64 was a great achievement for me. Having the opportunity to represent Pakistan at a platform like this was a dream come true. Participating in the games showed me a new passion for squash which has pushed me to put in my best everytime. These past few weeks have been the best of my squash career and I am so honored and grateful to have the incredible support behind me in Pakistan and at Dickinson."
