Devils Held Off by Blue Jays in Five Set Thriller

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team battled hard all night, but just did not have enough in the end to hold off the visiting Johns Hopkins University as the Blue Jays picked up a 3-2 conference win in front of a raucous crowd at the Kline Center.

Dickinson was out of the gates strong as Grace Coccagna, Sophia Denayer, Emma Lange, and Jordan Schucker all recorded points to take a 6-2 lead. The two sides traded the next six points, before the Jays went on a 7-2 flight finished by a Roxy Karrerr kill to make it 12-11 visitors. Emma Popham, Lange, and Schucker responded for DC scoring six of the next seven for a 17-13 edge. JHU picked up six of the ensuing 11 to close within 22-20, but the Devils got kills from Denayer and Popham to finish up the 25-21 win.

In the second it was the Jays who started fast as they led 5-0, before scores from Simone Adam and Chidinma Onukwugha made it 8-4. Amelia Kim answered with a kill for the Red and White, but the visitors then amassed a 14-4 rampage with Denayer and Lange picking up scores for DC to cut the margin to 22-9. The Devils were determined not to go down quietly as Alexa Barowski, Kim, and Lange recorded multiple kills, while Coccagna added an ace to make it 23-17. An ace put down by Elizabeth Hsieh wrapped up the second two points later at 25-17.

Once again Dickinson was playing catch-up to begin the third as Hopkins took a 15-6 lead. Scores by Barowski and Popham allowed the Devils to cut the deficit down to 18-12. However, Adam, Onukwugha, and Yu put together a 7-2 charge to earn a 25-14 victory.

Denayer, Kim, Lange, Popham, and Schucker got the Red and White off to a better start in the fourth as the home side took a 10-8 advantage. Three straight points for Adam moved JHU on top 11-10, before Kim, Lange, and Schucker organized a 10-2 rampage for a 20-13 lead. The two team traded the next six points to make it 23-16. Then, after two points from Adam, a kill for Kim and an error by Pamela Chiakpo set up a fifth set at 25-18.

For the third set in the match it was the Jays who had the fast start with kills from Adam, Chiakpo, and Yu giving the guests a 6-2 edge. Four visitor miscues and a kill by Lange pulled DC to within one at 7-6. However, JHU answered back with three scores by Karrer stretching the lead out to 11-8. Dickinson would pull to 11-10 on a combination block between Barowski and Denayer, but a 4-1 run for the Jays closed the match 15-11.
