Devils Drop Seesaw Non-Conference Duel With Profs

CARLISLE, Pa. - After a convincing win in the first set 25-12 over the visiting Rowan University on Tuesday night the Dickinson volleyball team seemed poised to stretch their win streak to four. However, the Red and White would drop the next three frames all by two points each to allow the Profs to leave the Kline Center with a 3-1 non-conference win.

The two sides traded blows early in the first as a kill for Sydni Greenwood gave the visitors a 3-2 lead, but then kills from Eliette Whittaker, Emma Popham, Dessie Anne Nietert and Ann Marie Patterson aided an 11-4 push to make it 13-6. A solo score by Jena Kaul stalled the charge for a second, before Alexa Barowski, Camille Dofiles, Amelia Kim and Mathilde Verbitsky claimed seven of the next eight for a 20-8 lead. Two DC miscues helped Rowan pull within 21-10. Dickinson would take four of the following six thanks to Dofiles, Nietert and Popham to grab the set 25-12.

The Devils began the second strong with Barowski, Kim and Verbitsky making it 7-3. The next six points were shared evenly, but then Brooke Adams, Ciara Bradley and Jena Kaul stormed back with an 11-3 rampage to move ahead 17-13. The Red and White did not want to go down without a fight as two kills by Nietert along with singles for Popham and Verbitsky helped in a 9-3 DC run to reclaim the lead 22-20. A pair of scores by Kaul and one from Maya Iovacchini made it 23-22 visitors, before an error and Barowski kill brought the home side to set point (24-23). Unfortunately, Iovacchini notched the ensuing three points for the 26-24 win.

Three Dickinson errors allowed the Profs to hold a 3-2 edge to kickoff the third. The Red and White responded with points from Cassidy Davis, Barowski and Nietert to jump ahead 9-4. The match of runs continued on as Kyra Hissner, Adams, Bradley, Greenwood, and Kaul went on a 10-2 jaunt for a 14-11 advantage. Four of the next five belonged to the hosts thanks to Barowski, Davis and Popham to knot the score (15-15). After Rowan captured the next three points, kills by Barowski, Davis, Dofiles and Popham helped to pull DC to one back at 20-19. The trio of Adams, Greenwood and Kaul made it 24-20 visitors, but then Barowski, Popham and Verbitsky cut the deficit to one (24-23). However, Kaul would secure the final point off a feed from Adams (25-23).

The Profs were flying early to start the fourth as Adams, Greenwood and Kaul all recorded points for a 6-1 lead. An ace from Grace Coccagna as well as kills by Davis (2) and Nietert cut it down to 8-7. Rowan rallied back with seven of the ensuing ten points thanks to Bradley, Hissner and Kaul stretching the lead to 15-10. Two Popham kills and a single from Barowski helped DC to trim the gap by just one to 18-14. Three of the next four went to RU making it 21-15, but then two aces by Kim and single kill for Nietert along with six Prof miscues put the Devils on the verge of forcing a fifth at 24-23. Two kills from Kaul and a pair of scores by Nietert still left the Red and White looking at set point (26-25). Unfortunately, two kills put away by Kaul set the stage for Hissner to deliver the final blow of the 28-26 win.
