Inside the Devils Den
Fireside Review - No. 8 Johns Hopkins 34, DEVILS 23 (Carlisle, Pa. - Biddle Field)
Dickinson began the day with a 6-0 lead on a two-yard scamper by
Presley Egbers, before a pair of Joe Zahner field goals brought the visitors level 6-6. However, the Red and White would reclaim the lead going to the break when
Kieran O'Neill drilled a 35-yard kick to make it 9-6. The Blue Jays needed just one play early in the third to jump back ahead as Bay Harvey hit Cole Crotty for an 86-yard TD strike (Joe Zahner kick). Once again though the Devils had an answer as the ensuing kickoff was taken by
Princeton Douglass at the DC4 and he raced 96 yards to the house making it 16-13 (
Justin Worobel kick). The following Hopkins possession was cut short when
Bram Leys got to Harvey and knocked the ball loose which allowed
Brendan Walker to collect the rock on the JHU9 and run to the endzone increasing the gap to 23-13 (
Justin Worobel kick). Unfortunately, the Blue Jays tallied the final 21 points of the contest to secure the 34-23 win.
The Offensive General
Presley Egbers is the man under center for the Red and White and he is coming off a solid game versus the nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins going 8-of-16 for 166 yards with one interception. For the season, Egbers is 120-of-231 picking up 1546 yards and 14 TDs, while throwing just seven picks through nine games.
Pass Catchers
Egbers hooked up with four different weapons on Saturday as
Bobby Markey paced the group with 119 yards on just four catches, while
Diante Ball chipped in two for six yards. The duo of
Matt Maiona and
Devlin McCool accounted for two grabs and 41 yards. On the year, the quartet of Ball, Douglass, Markey and McCool have all put up over 200 total yards and more than two TDs each.
Rushing Attack
Ball led the Devils on the ground with 58 yards on 17 touches, which allowed him to maintain his conference lead as he averages over 100 yards per game at 106.9. Egbers also toted the rock a bakers' dozen times against the Blue Jays totaling 25 yards and one score.
Defense Helps as Well
John Prochniak paced the Dickinson defensive unit with ten tackles (seven solo), followed right behind by
Bram Leys with his nine stops (two sacks), forced fumble and quarterback hurry.
Jeremy Reid provided assistance from the secondary posting eight hits, while both
Neville Krueger and
Alex Sulin recorded seven tackles apiece, including three for loss. The duo of
James Basilii and
Sam Orzolek each notched six hits. Walker chipped in five stops (four solo) and one fumble recovery that resulted in a nine-yard touchdown return.
The Bears Den
Ursinus arrives at their Senior Day showdown with the Devils holding an identical 6-3 marks after the Bears used two turnovers to help amass a run of 28 consecutive points to hold on for a 48-35 road conference win over Gettysburg College last Saturday afternoon. In that game the two sides combined for 1,045 yards of total offense which was the most in an Ursinus College game since 2013 against the Red and White.
Jalen Bradford heads up the UC attack and is coming off a huge day versus the Bullets completing 18 of his 30 throws for 312 yards and four touchdowns, while being sacked and picked off two times each. He attempted to spread the rock out to nine different targets on the afternoon linking up with seven of them. Justin Collier was his favorite receiver as he eclipsed the century mark with a 108 yards on seven grabs leading to a pair of touchdowns. Cameron Dennis and Cody House each caught three passes for a combined 136 yards and two scores, while Marvin Atkins caught two posting 31 yards. Billy Cook, Michael D'Amico and Ryder Zulkowski all hauled in one pass. On the ground Tony Holden finished with a game-high 22 runs and 184 yards (8.4 avg) to go along with two TDs. Dawson Fresses fell just shy of the 100-yard mark at 97 thanks to his 17 touches. Bradford also racked up five rushes totaling 31 yards and a score.
Connor Carter led the Bears defense with 11 stops and one fumble recovery. The pair of Michael McCuen and Sean Spinosa combined for 15 tackles (two for loss), while Ryan Bodolus and Marc Clayton finished the day with six hits each and one sack. Anthony Esposito, Brett Gross and Pat McManus all ended the contest with four or more tackles and added one INT between the trio.
