Inside the Game
Starters
Ethan Hamilton and Lingenfelter each allowed a couple of runners over the first two innings, but neither of them let any cross the dish as things stayed scoreless into the third. In the top-half of the frame an error by the first baseman let
Chase Weller reach followed by an infield single for
Ryan Thompson to put men on the corners for
Will Ferris. He would bounce into a double-play, but scored Weller for the 1-0 edge.
Dylan Posencheg ended the effort with a grounder to second. The Maroons got three in their half as Nate Chown and Mason Staz notched singles, before consecutive doubles by Conner Butler and Jonny Wall drove home three for a 3-1 edge.Â
After a scoreless fourth, Dickinson would draw level in the fifth when
Christian Kim started things off with a single, followed by
Kaden Sigmon blasting a two-run shot over the right-center field wall tying the score at 3-3. A free pass to Ferris and a hit by Posencheg gave DC the opportunity to take the lead, but
Kenny Tagliareni popped up to second retiring the side.Â
The game went to the seventh and final frame still locked at 3-3 as Thompson and Ferris provided two-out singles to give Posencheg the chance to be a hero. Unfortunately, he flew out to center for the last out. Peichel who took over for Hamilton got two quick outs, prior to allowing a walk and a single leaving two on for Butler. He would produce the game-winning hit by blooping a single over the head of the Devils infield to scoring the winning run at 4-3. Â
Game Two - DEVILS 10, Maroons 5
Pitching Decision
W -
Austin Buzza (1-1) | L - Jon Rossi (0-1)
Inside the Game
After neither side could do much in the first the Red and White would get to RC starter Jackson Murphy during the second as
Derek Smith doubled, Sigmon singled and Weller walked to load the bases with one gone for Thompson. The left-handed hitting designated hitter smoked a bases-clearing triple to deep right-center giving DC a 3-0 edge and leaving a runner 90-feet away. Ferris was next and produced a sac fly to drive in Thompson for the 4-0 lead after two-and-a-half. Unfortunately for the Devils starter
Grayson Walker could not complete the shutdown inning as walks to Corey Coogan and George Gustafson led to a two-out RBI knock for Ty Staz making it 4-1 through two. The Maroons then cut it down to 4-2 an inning later when Coogan doubled to right plating Jacob Bonzon who began things with a walk.Â
In the fourth, Dickinson went to work trying to build on their lead as Ferris, Thompson and Weller all reached to kick things off against new pitcher Gardner Meeks. After getting a strikeout of Posencheg, Tagliareni reached on an error to score one before a fielder's choice by
Matt Torres scored the sixth of the game for the Red and White. A walk to to Smith, followed by a free pass given to Kim forced in the seventh run. Sigmon then stepped into the box trying to add onto the advantage, but grounded out to second for the final out.Â
The well dried up for both sides until the home-half of the sixth when Roanoke scored three times. First, singles by Nate Prince and Coogan led to a sac fly by Gustafson. The second run of the frame came in when pinch hitter by Brady Ivory reached on an error to score one, while the third run crossed thanks to the second Devils error of the inning making it 7-5 leaving two on for Butler. That signaled the end of the day for Buzza as
Joey Sangiuolo entered and got the batter to pop up to third for the final out. Kim, Sigmon and Weller all reached against Isaac Brooks to begin the seventh resulting in Mason Roy taking over on the hill to face Thompson. After getting a strikeout of Thompson, a wild pitch allowed all runners to move up a bag, including letting Kim cross home. Two batters later Posencheg produced a two-run RBI single extending the gap to 10-5 with two gone. Tagliareni would be unable to add onto the advantage for the Devils as he flew out to center for the final out. A pair of one-out hits left two in scoring position against Sangiuolo. However, he settled down and got a strikeout as well as a fly out to end the game at 10-5.
