Gess Bookends #8 Devils Seesaw Win Over Maroons

SPARKS, Md. - Sophomore midfielder Ethan Gess tallied the first and last goal of the afternoon as the eighth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse stayed unbeaten with 14-13 nail biting win over Roanoke College in a neutral site non-conference contest played at Tierney Field at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.

An early turnover forced by Ben Tomick led to Will Farrell missing high of the cage, but then 20-seconds later the Devils were on the board with Lee Dunn finding Gess who slipped the ball past Taylor Lewis with 12:43 left. The Maroons then tallied four of the next five with Luke Kammerman having one stopped by Chris Brandau, before Noah Good leveled things. The two sides shared the following six shots with Lewis beating away an attempt from Dunn and Brandau shutting down Sean Kennedy to keep it at 1-1 inside the final six minutes. Roanoke took their first lead ten seconds after that thanks to Aidan Sullivan. However, that seemed to snap the Devils to left as John McKee won the ensuing faceoff leading to chances from Sascha Gannon, Evan Karetsos, Skyler Schluter and Dunn, but none got by Lewis. A slashing call against Jack Schutte resulted in a man-down situation which DC surprisingly took advantage of as Farrell ripped the twine for the tie at 2-2 through one.

Dickinson pushed the pace to start the second with Sam Bunten forcing a stop out of Lewis, before Owen Porter, Capp Reynolds and Porter missed the target within the opening minute. The Red and White then would find the breakthrough through Sam Campbell, but RC had the response a minute later thanks to Wyatt Whitlow making it 3-3 with 4:26 gone. The Maroons tried to take the lead back with rips by Bryson Miller and Kammerman off the faceoff, but Brandau had the answer. That led to Dunn firing a transition attempt wide, followed by Griffin Moore striking unassisted at the 6:39 mark. Less than a minute later, Good knotting things up prior to the long-pole of Reynolds blasting the rock past Lewis (5-4). The Maroons had shots from Luca Docking and Dominic Cuomo stopped, before Whitlow hit the back of the net. However, Dickinson took the lead into the locker room when Campbell notched his second of the period for the 6-5 halftime edge.

The Red and White appeared to seize control to kickoff the third as Brandau denied Whitlow resulting in a groundball pick up for Xander Usich leading to a marker by Bunten, prior to Owen Porter tickling the twine for the 8-5 advantage with not even two minutes off the clock. There would not be another tally until Whitlow beat Brandau with 10:51 left. After Brandau and Lewis traded stops over the next two possessions Farrell dished the rock to Dunn who fired a shot past Lewis for the 9-6 edge. The goalies continued to be on full display with Brandau making two more saves, while Lewis turned away Porter to hold the margin where it was. A stop by the Devils keeper with 9:30 gone allowed Schluter to pick up the loose ball finding Dunn who sent it back to Schluter for the finish. Dickinson tallied four more shots, but could not solve Lewis again which allowed the Maroons to score on their next two shots to pull within 10-8 inside the final two minutes. DC would beat the third quarter horn once more thanks to an unassisted goal by Schluter to lead 11-8 heading to the fourth.

Goals were flying in to start the fourth as James Isaacson and Kammerman each tallied for their respective sides within the opening minute. Lewis prevented the Devils from adding on on two occasions stopping both Campbell and Schluter, while Brandau beatoff an offering from Whitlow. With 8:53 left RC trimmed the gap by one thanks to Whitlow and then off a faceoff win tried to get within one, but the ball was given away by Kammerman leading to Farrell scoring at the other end making it 13-10. After two more Lewis saves, the Maroons picked up the momentum tallying three times in just over 90-seconds to draw level at 13-13. Brandau would prevent RC from taking the lead when he stopped Ethan Caldwell allowing Gess to bury the game-winner with 39-ticks left.
