AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team kicked off their eight-game Florida spring break trip with a two-game sweep of fellow Pennsylvania institution Saint Vincent College at Lake Myrtle Park winning by scores of 10-6 and 8-5.
Game One - DEVILS 10, Bearcats 6 (F/7)
Pitching Decision
W -
Ethan Hamilton (1-0) | L - Nate Davis (1-1)
Inside the Game
Dickinson went right to work against Davis in the first as five straight Devils reached with one-out. First,
Kenny Tagliareni singled, then
Derek Smith walked, which was followed by an RBI two-bagger for
Christian Kim. Next, was
Kaden Sigmon who smoked a two-run double making it 3-0.
Matt Torres cleared the bags next with a triple scoring Sigmon, before coming home on a sac fly by
Ryan Thompson for a 5-0 lead prior to Saint Vincent getting a chance. Hamilton could not put together a clean bottom-half as a walk and a groundout led to Jordan Sabol scoring on a Dickinson error later in the frame leaving it at 5-1 through one.
After a scoreless second, DC would tack on four more during the third when Kim and Sigmon once again traded doubles to score one, followed by a miscue from the third baseman scoring another. Davis then settled down getting back-to-back strikeouts by
Johnny Bruno and
Will Ferris, but then
Dylan Posencheg poked a two-run double to stretch it to 9-0 heading to the bottom-half. Hamilton allowed a leadoff knock to Dimitri Gary, prior to retiring the next three hitters.
The fourth and fifth went by with neither side mounting a threat shifting the contest to the sixth. With one-down a triple for Tagliareni and single for Smith resulted in the tenth coming across for the Red and White. Kim unfortunately then grounded into a double play to stall the rally. Devils pitching ran into some trouble in the home-half giving up four hits and issuing three walks which allowed five to come across for the Bearcats closing things to 10-6. However, Centennial Pitcher of the Week
Joey Sangiuolo was able to gain control of the situation eventually and got a fielder's choice to wrap things up. He then preserved the win in the seventh by going "three up, three down".
Game Two - DEVILS 8, Bearcats 5 (F/7)
Pitching Decision
W -
Grayson Walker (1-0) | L - Michael Klingensmith (2-1)
Inside the Game
Most of the scoring in this one occurred in the sixth. However, Dickinson did find one in the first as a two-out single by Smith was followed by another Kim two-bagger to plate one. Walker the Red Devil starter allowed a leadoff hit during the top of the second, before setting down the ensuing three batters. During the home-half of the frame the Red and White had
Ethan Sodl reach on an error, but he was gunned down at the plate trying to score on a Bruno knock to right wrapping up the second.
Pitching ruled the next two frames holding the score at 1-0 shifting to the fifth. Consecutive singles and an error by Walker allowed the tying run to score for the Bearcats. That was the only damage they would be able to do as Walker got a popout and a flyout to end the rally. Dickinson got the run back in the last of the frame when a double by Bruno and a fielder's choice for Posencheg led to a sac fly by Tagliareni to make it 2-1 heading to the sixth.
The first four men reached for Saint Vincent plating one. Dylan Schmude then gave the Bearcats the lead with a two-run single giving them a 4-2 edge still with just one out and two on. Sangiuolo making his second appearance of the day got back-to-back flyout to retire the side. Dickinson kicked off the home-half of the frame with a jack by Sigmon, who was then followed by knocks from Torres and Thompson to score pinch-runner
Nathan Bowman knotting things at 4-4. An RBI for Posencheg made it 5-4, before Tagliareni drove him in with a single. A hit batter and walk loaded the bags for Sigmon who picked up his second and third RBIs of the inning with a two-run single opening up an 8-4 advantage after six. Two hit batters and a walk gave the Bearcats life during the seventh leading to an RBI single for Hyde with two gone. The next batter was Schmude who bounced into a fielder's choice to end the game.
