AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team put together a complete performance on Sunday afternoon doing it with both the bats and the arms winning a pair of games against Clarkson University by scores of 12-1 and 7-3 at Lake Myrtle Field. Game One - DEVILS 12, Golden Knights 1 (F/7)
Pitching Decision
W -
Koll Peichel (1-1) | L - Mateo Sarabia (0-2)
Inside the Game
After a scoreless first, Sarabia ran into issues in the second as a single for
Kaden Sigmon and an error by the shortstop against
Matt Torres set the stage for
Ryan Thompson with one out. He plated one with a single, followed by an RBI knock for
Johnny Bruno to make it 2-0 and leave men on the corners for
Nathan Bowman. During his at-bat both runners swiped a bag, which led to Thompson racing home for the 3-0 edge through one-and-a-half. Peichel then took to the hill in the home-half and got two flyouts as well as a strikeout to complete the shutdown inning. The Golden Knights recorded their lone run of the contest in the last of the third when a walk, a failed pickoff and a single left men at first and third with one down for Caleb Doyle. He picked up a single to drive in one making it 3-1, before CJ Cartier bounced into an inning-ending double play.Â
Each team put runners in scoring position during the fourth, but neither was able to get one back across home leaving the score 3-1 heading to the fifth. Walks to both
Dylan Posencheg and Bowman along with a single from
Kenny Tagliareni filled the bags for
Derek Smith. He would stretch the Devils lead to 5-1 with a two-run two-bagger. That chased Sarabia from the game and brought in Sean Eddington. After a strikeout of
Christian Kim, Sigmon was intentionally walked to re-load the bases for Torres who drove home one with a sacrifice. Two batters later the rally came to an end when Bruno whiffed at strike three. Peichel responded in a big way by striking out the side in the bottom-half.Â
Dickinson continued to add-on in the sixth against Eddington as Posencheg ledoff with a single and went to second on a passed ball, leading to an RBI knock for Tagliareni with one down. After Smith went down on strikes, Kim worked a walk, prior to Sigmon driving in two more with a double to push it to 9-1 heading to the seventh. The Red and White tallied three more times in the final frame as the first three men reach, leading to a sac fly from Tagliareni. Smith then produced the second sac of the inning with a flyout to center. Kim finished off the offensive onslaught with an RBI single. With one out and the bases full of Golden Knights in the bottom of the inning,
Peyton Fox took over on the hill and induced a game-ending double play to cap the 12-1 win.
Game Two - DEVILS 7, Golden Knights 3 (F/7)
Pitching Decision
W -
Austin Buzza (2-1) | L - Hunter Geisler (0-2)
Inside the Game
Clarkson was on the board in the top of the first against Buzza as a walk to Cartier led to an RBI double for Colby Brouillette two hitters later. He then settled down and got the next two men to groundout. The next run came in the last of the second when an error on the right fielder with Torres at-bat put one in scoring position for
Chase Weller who drove him in with a single. Geisler worked out of a jam by getting a double play out of Bowman to retire the side.Â
After both pitchers went "three up, three down" in the third each side would record runs during the fourth. First, Clarkson got a one-out knock from Jake Millich and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Strikeouts of Robert Whalen and James Mason sandwiched a run-scoring single by Quinn Maslowski to take a 2-1 edge into the bottom-half of the frame. Three consecutive singles from Kim, Sigmon and Torres loaded the bags for Weller. He plated the tying run with an RBI double play making it 2-2. Bruno was then hit by a pitch, putting two on for Bowman. Before he stepped into the box Derrick Lewis replaced Geisler on the hill and watched Bowman reach on an error by his left-fielder allowing two men to race home giving DC a 4-2 advantage through four. Dickinson added three more in the ensuing frame as things started off with a free pass to Tagliareni, followed by a single for Smith to put them on the corners for Kim. He advanced Smith to second with a groundout, prior to a intentional walk issued to Sigmon putting runners everywhere for Weller. He plated one with a walk and then an error by the second baseman with Bruno at the dish scored two more pushing it to 7-2. Bowman then flied out to right to retire the side.Â
Charlie Bien would hurl the final two frames giving one run in the sixth on back-to-back two-out doubles by Millich and Whalen. Then he would allow a single in the seventh to start things off, prior to recording two groundouts and a flyout to close the game at 7-3.
