OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The seventh-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team rallied back from multiple four-game deficits and notched the go-ahead goal with just 1:28 left. However, the host Stevenson University had the response with 22-seconds left, before sticking the game-winner at the 2:08 mark of overtime to escape with the 15-14 win on Day One of the Mustang Classic. With the loss the Red and White had their 21-game regular season win streak snapped.Â
Dickinson was off an running early as
Lee Dunn took the first the first shot just 46-seconds in, but missed high of Justin Scorese. However, off the restart
James Isaacson took the ball on a solo jaunt around the cage and stuff it passed the keeper. The Red and White went in search of a second right away, unfortunately the offerings by
Sam Campbell,
Owen Porter and
Will Single were denied. That led to Stevenson seizing momentum for the next three minutes with Griffin Gast, Jack Scaliti, Andrew Searing and Robbie Vanderklugt all besting
Chris Brandau to make it 4-1 home side with 7:38 left. The Devils got back on the board off the ensuing faceoff as
John McKee claimed the groundball leading to
Ethan Gess burying the rock in the bottom corner (4-2). Shots by
Griffin Moore,
Skyler Schluter and Porter tried to spark a DC run, but all missed the mark. It would be Stevenson who got the final tally of the period when Josh Brannan rocketed one to the cage for the 5-2 edge through one. Â
For the second quarter in a row it was the Red and White who found the early tally as Schluter worked his way free from behind the cage and tucked a diving shot to the back of goal. Stevenson once again though had the response as they released the next five shots of the game forcing two Brandau saves, before Dillon Linhardt cashed in to re-establish the three-goal edge (6-3) with 3:36 off the clock. After Cam Leydig pushed it to 7-3, Isaacson struck with his second to cut the margin down to 7-4. Dickinson appeared to have captured the momentum back when
Cole Schwartz jarred the ball loose from Scaliti, leading to a nice finish from
Griffin Moore (7-5). However, the hosts returned the favor a little over a minute later with Searing cashing in. Each team would tally once in the final two minutes with
Ben Tomick notching his first of the season after a stop by Brandau, before Ryan Coleman made it 9-6 heading to halftime.Â
Both keepers were hot early in the third as Brandau denied both Brannan and Ford inside the first minute, while Scorese had the answer against Schluter. After the Devils defense built a wall on a Mustang clear, Isaacson capped off his hat trick with 4:29 off the clock to cut the deficit once again to two (9-7). However, off the ensuing faceoff win by Grant Zick, Coleman stuck a shot passed Brandau. With 9:47 left in the period the Red and White were afforded a two-minute man-up for an illegal body check, during that time offerings by
Jack Murphy and Schluter all went wide allowing the Mustangs to see out the time. Ford extended the hosts lead by one with 6:47 remaining, which seemed to wake the DC attack up as
Will Farrell, Isaacson and Porter all let shots fly at cage, forcing two saves. The Devils finally cracked back through the Mustangs staunch defense at the 11:41 mark when
Sam Campbell ran down the right-wing and ripped a shot crossbar down. Dickinson kept up the pressure with Campbell (2) and Farrell tasking Scorese to make three more stops, before Dunn bested the goalie to give DC life at 11-9 with a quarter to go.Â
Dickinson picked up right where they left off to kickoff the fourth with Schluter finding Gess at the top of the box for a blast past the goalie closing to within one 11-10 inside the first minute. A Brandau save at the other end led to chances from Isaacson and Single going wide, resulting in a long-pole goal by Nicholas Mulvey. On that play
Capp Reynolds took a slashing penalty, which did not deter the DC offense as Dunn finished off a dish by Tomick man-down to make it 12-11 still with 10:45 to go. Each side found the net over the next minute with Coleman (man-up) and Dunn going over the shoulder and behind the back to leave the score at 13-12. Two stops by Brandau against Gast and Linhardt kept DC within striking distance with under three minutes left. The Red Devils would tally twice inside of the 30-seconds through Dunn and Isaacson to give DC a slim 14-13 advantage. However, Stevenson tied the game with 20-ticks left thanks to Scaliti forcing overtime.Â
Dickinson got a look at the game-winner at the 1:53 mark, but the shot from the top of the area was swallowed up easily by Scorese. Stevenson got one chance by Scaliti that went to the left prompting a home timeout with 2:36 to go. Unfortunately, for the Red and White a late slide by the defense led to Leydig working himself loose in front and beating Brandau low for the winner.Â
