CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team did just enough in game one to hold on for a 3-2 win against the visiting Elizabethtown College Blue Jays, before the bats erupted in game two as the Red and White claimed a 12-1 win in five to secure the sweep at Dickinson Park on Tuesday.
Game One - DEVILS 3, Blue Jays 2
Pitching Decision
W -
Riley Kuehn (3-2) | L - Mikaela Benner (2-1)
Inside the Game
The visitors applied pressure on Kuehn with the leadoff batter Kadyn Crisswell ripping a triple to deep left-center. However, Kuehn then got a strikeout along with a pair of infield popups to end the inning. In the home-half
Eden Blanker provided a two-out double off of Benner, but was stranded when
Paige Hahn flew out to left.
Zoe Kleeblatt came up with another two-out knock during the second, unfortunately a popout by
Jessie Sandusky closed the frame.
After Kuehn, went one-two-three an inning later the Devils offense went to work in the last of the third with the game scoreless. Singles by Laia Gwathmey and
Devon Kueny started the frame to leave runners at the corners for
Jane Lloyd, who produced a swinging bunt RBI single right in front the of the catcher to score one. Two hitters later a free pass handed out to
Eden Blanker set the stage for a one-out RBI base hit to left for
Emily Whelan. She was then followed by a sacrifice fly off the stick of
Abby Kohan to plate Lloyd to make it 3-0 through three. Dickinson attempted to add on during the the last of the fourth as the Devils had the bags full for Hahn with two down, but her fielder's choice saw the runner going from second to third forced out to retire the side.
The Red and White continued to hold the 3-0 advantage into the sixth when the visitors would chip away. Ashley Mistichel began things with a two-bagger to left-center, before a sac bunt moved her to third. The next hitter was Brooke Huczko and that was when things got interesting. She tapped the Kuehn offering out to Gwathmey at third, unfortunately for DC her throw was a little off the mark allowing one to score. Hahn at first tracked down the loose ball as Huczko continued to round the bases she attempted to throw her out at third, but the toss went over the head of Gwathmey to let Huczko come all the way around to score trimming it to 3-2. Kuehn then got a popout and flyout to stop the rally. In the seventh, Elizabethtown put the tying run at second when Megan Thomas doubled with two away, before Ashley Judd popped up in foul territory to end the game.
Game Two - DEVILS 12, Blue Jays 1 (F/5)
Pitching Decision
W -
Lindsay Kucker (5-2) | L - Paige Phillips (1-5)
Inside the Game
The Blue Jays took an early lead against Kucker in the first as Crisswell singled to, before two batters later Phillips stroked a double to left to score the run. Dickinson would get revenge during the home-half as with one away, a double for Lloyd, walk to Blanker and a passed ball put runners on the corners for Hahn. She would be safe on a fielder's choice that allowed Lloyd to score, while an error on the throw by the third baseman let Blanker and Hahn go to third and second respectively. Whelan was next and she smoked a two-run single to left-center for the 3-1 advantage. Singles for Kohan and Sandusky filled the pillows still with just one gone, before a popout and groundout retired the side. The Devils continued to pile one during the second as knocks from Kueny and Lloyd, set the stage for a two-run two-bagger off the stick of Blanker to extend the margin to 5-1. That was the end of Phillips in the circle as she was replaced by Maddy Jean. After getting a groundout by Hahn, Whelan ripped a double to center for the 6-1 lead. A two-out walk drawn by Sandusky had players on the corners for
Emma Glosson. During her at-bat Sandusky attempted to steal second, but got caught up in a rundown allowing Whelan to race in from third stretching it to 7-1 through two. The third inning saw DC tack on five more as a walk to Gwathmey and double by Kueny, led to a two-run rope by Lloyd to left. That brought another pitcher into the circle for the Jays as Victoria Caputo came in and watched an error by her shortstop let Lloyd score. The Devils kept the train moving with singles by
Jen Klepfer and Kohan loading the bases for Sandusky who produced an RBI groundout to second. She was followed by and RBI knock to left from Glosson to push it out to 12-1 going to the fourth.
After setting down six consecutive Blue Jay batters Kucker allowed a double and walk during the fourth to put two on with one out, before a fielder's choice and strikeout resulted in no damage. Reliever
Kaylie Renner entered in the seventh and surrendered a triple as well as a walk in the fifth, but got a groundout along with a popup to second to end the game.
The Dickinson pitching duo of Kucker and Renner went five innings, giving up just four hits and one run, while fanning a combined six batters.
