CARLISLE, Pa. - Dickinson College head softball coach Matt Richwine has announced that he is stepping down from his position, bringing to a close a long and accomplished tenure leading the Red Devils softball program.
Richwine's time with Dickinson softball was defined by sustained commitment, milestone victories, postseason success and the development of some of the top players in the Centennial Conference. Since returning to Dickinson in 2001, Richwine helped guide the program through multiple championship seasons while establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches in program history. His tenure included two Centennial Conference championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, major coaching milestones and a long list of individual player honors.
The Red Devils reached one of the program's defining moments in 2010, when Dickinson captured its first Centennial Conference championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. That title marked a major breakthrough for the program and helped cement Dickinson as a conference contender. The Red Devils followed that run by capturing the Centennial Conference regular-season title in 2011, continuing one of the strongest stretches in program history.
Richwine and the Red Devils returned to the top of the conference in 2019, winning Dickinson's second Centennial Conference crown with a 1-0 championship-game victory over Haverford. That season, Dickinson advanced to the NCAA regionals and added an NCAA Tournament victory over Wilson College, giving the program another memorable postseason run. Richwine was named Centennial Conference Coach of the Year following the championship campaign.
The 2019 season also highlighted the individual excellence Richwine helped develop throughout his tenure. Madison Milaszewski was named the Centennial Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player after an outstanding postseason performance in the circle, including a conference tournament no-hitter. She allowed just one run over three games and recorded 20 strikeouts during the championship run. Milaszewski was also named the Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year and later earned NFCA All-Atlantic Region recognition.
Individual player development remained one of the hallmarks of Richwine's career. During his time leading the program after returning in 2001, he coached 68 All-Centennial Conference selections, including two Centennial Conference Players of the Year in 2007 and 2008. He also coached Centennial Conference Pitchers of the Year in 2011 and 2019, giving the program elite representation on both sides of the game. Dickinson placed five players on the All-Centennial Conference team in both 2004 and 2013, reflecting the depth of talent that came through the program during his tenure.
Richwine also reached several major career milestones while at Dickinson. In 2013, he recorded both his 200th career victory and his 100th Centennial Conference win. In 2019, during the same season in which the Red Devils captured the conference title, he eclipsed the 300-win mark. He departs Carlisle with 358 victories in addition to being the winningest coach in Centennial Conference play at 179.
Beyond the championship seasons and milestone victories, Richwine's impact can be measured through the consistency of the student-athletes who developed under his leadership. His teams produced all-conference performers across multiple eras, from early standouts in the mid-2000s to the championship-winning group of 2019. The program's top individual accomplishments during his tenure included Centennial Conference Players of the Year, Centennial Conference Pitchers of the Year, All-Conference selections, a conference tournament MVP, regional recognition and numerous standout postseason performances.
Richwine's departure closes a significant chapter in Dickinson softball history. His time with the Red Devils included the program's first Centennial Conference championship, a second conference title nearly a decade later, multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and some of the most decorated individual players in school history.
"Matt has had a tremendous impact on Dickinson Softball and the many student-athletes who have come through the program during his tenure" said Director of Athletics Celine Cunningham. We are grateful for his years of service and wish him and his family all the best in their next chapter."
Dickinson softball will move forward with a foundation built over more than two decades of leadership, player development and postseason success. Richwine leaves behind a program shaped by championship moments, individual excellence and a long record of commitment to Red Devil athletics.
A nationwide search will begin immediately for a new leader of the Red Devils softball program.
