Inside the Game
Haverford got on the board right away in the top of the first as singles by Daniel Rosman and Jack Wallis led to the first run coming across. An error and a free pass filled the bags with two down, but
Ethan Hamilton got Chuck Norton to groundout for the final out.
Kaden Sigmon recorded the only DC hit in the home-half against Sam Cohen as Dickinson was held off the scoreboard. The Fords added another run during the second on three more singles, before a grounder to Sigmon at third retired the side. Dickinson had a chance to chip away at the deficit in the bottom-half as both
Matt Torres and
Ryan Thompson reached on HC miscues, while
Dylan Posencheg singled to right loading the cushions with just one out. Unfortunately,
Nathan Bowman struck out and
Kenny Tagliareni lined out to third to squash the rally. The Devils would finally trim the margin by one in the last of the third when Sigmon sent an 0-2 pitch from Cohen over the right-field fence leaving it at 2-1 into the fourth.
Haverford would add onto their advantage in the fourth as a leadoff double and hit batter were enough to chase Hamilton from the game and bring on
Thomas Marshman. A groundout advanced both men into scoring position, before a fielder's choice plated one. Zach Landry then laid down a sacrifice bunt to score the Fords fourth of the game taking a 4-1 lead to the home-half of the frame. With one on and two down, Bowman smacked the ball up the middle to place men on the corners for Tagliareni. He would eventually groundout, but during his at-bat Bowman swiped second which allowed the runner from third to hustle in making it 4-2. After a scoreless fifth, the Fords added two more within the top of the sixth thanks to a walk to Jonny Flieder leading to a two-run bomb from Zach Becker giving HC a 6-2 lead into the home-half. Singles for Thompson and Posencheg along with a catcher's interference call letting Tagliareni reach loaded the bags for
Andrew Mazzone. He stepped up a roped a two-run two-bagger to right. That ended the day for Cohen as Wyatt Mattison entered the game and immediately gave up a two-run single to Sigmon tying the game. The Devils were not done however as
Derek Smith smoked a 2-1 pitch beyond the wall in right giving DC their first lead at 8-6 into the seventh.
Joey Sangiuolo took over on the hill to begin the inning replacing
Pat Metzger who wrapped up the sixth. He would hit two batters in the frame, but got Flieder to flyout to Bowman in left to allow no damage. After that it was all about Sangiuolo as he retired the next six Fords he faced, including three strikeouts to lock-up the save and the win.
The On-Deck Circle
Dickinson (23-17-1) has now earned themselves one more game later this afternoon against the loser of top-seeded Johns Hopkins and second-seeded Franklin & Marshall. If the Devils can secure a win in that game they would advance to Sunday needing two wins to claim the title.
