CARLISLE, Pa. - Senior guard
Clair Marion knocked down a triple with 20 seconds left to not only put the Dickinson women's basketball team ahead for good, but also join the 1000-point club as the Red and White held off a late charge from the visiting Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks to post a 58-55 win inside the Kline Center.
- After the two sides combined to miss the opening four shots, the home side then went to work with Caitlin Blackman and Marion each hitting a three while Abby John chipped in a free throw to make it 7-0 four minutes in.
- Dorothy Loffredo split a pair at the line to get the visitors on the board, before an "old-fashioned" three-point play for Gabby Smelcer pushed it to 10-1.
- The teams shared the next six to leave the gap at nine (16-7) just under two minutes left.
- First-year Lizzie McGrath picked up her first collegiate bucket with a three to give DC a 19-9 lead through ten.
- McGrath continued to have the hot-hand early in the frame picking up five in a row for a 24-9 edge 90-seconds in.
- Stevens then found some offense going on a 12-2 push ending with two on the stripe for Kay Decker to make it 26-21 DC with 2:55 left.
- Dickinson answered back in a big way first-year Emma Landes joining Victoria Zerbe and John on a 7-1 gallop to take a 33-22 advantage to the half.
- Leyla Castro scored four of the Ducks eight during an 8-0 run (33-30) over the opening 6:02 of the frame as the home side came up empty on their first eight chances.
- Foul shots for McGrath and Zerbe, coupled with a driving layup by Marion extended the Devils gap to 39-30.
- Castro would tally five more for the Ducks, while Marion collected four on her own allowing the hosts to hold a 43-35 lead with a quarter to play.
- Smelcer opened things up with four straight to make it 47-35, but Stevens answered back with seven in a row ending a triple for Castro cutting the deficit down to 47-42 with just under seven minutes left.
- Over the next three minutes a three-ball for Marion and foul shot by Zerbe sandwiched a jumper out of the hands of Zoe Kashner leaving DC in front 51-44.
- Six of the next eight went to the visitors with four coming from Lucy Alberici to leave it 52-50 home side.
- A layup out of the hands of Marion made it 54-50, but Stevens responded with five in a row as a free throw for Decker gave the Ducks a slim 55-54 edge with 40 seconds left.
- On the ensuing possession, Marion had the milestone moment stepping beyond the arc on the right-wing and sticking the three for the 57-55 lead.Â
- Stevens got two looks at a potential winner, but none of them went down which allowed Clare Cronley to split a pair at the other end for the the 58-55 win.
