Devils Late Season Skid Goes to Three with OT Loss to Shorewomen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Coming off of two of their toughest games of the season the Dickinson women's basketball team attempted to get back on the right track Saturday afternoon with a three-hour bus ride down to Washington College for a conference matchup against the Shorewomen. Despite getting an 18 point, 12 rebound double-double from senior Lindsey Hollenshead the Red and White came out on the wrong end of a 70-66 overtime setback inside Fall Gymnasium.

Jumpers from Kaitlyn Boggs and Serena Pluta had the home side out to a 4-2 lead a minute in, but then triples for Clair Marion and Hollenshead along with a jumper by Caitlin Blackman gave DC a 10-4 edge with 3:11 gone. The duo of Karry Kelliher and Abby Meredith brought Washington within 13-10, before an "old-fashioned" three-point play by Marion made it 16-10. Foul shots from Boggs and Kelliher along with a bucket for Emma Robinson once again closed the gap to one (16-15). However, baskets put away by Abby John, Blackman and Hollenshead gave Dickinson a 20-16 lead after ten minutes.

The Red and White continued their push early in the second as two Marion treys and a layup for Hollenshead pushed the margin to double-digits at 28-18 with 7:29 left. After the next two minutes went by scoreless buckets by Jenna Weinstein and Hollenshead encompassed a layup for Kiersten Rose to make it 33-22 still with over three minutes to play. The remainder of the period belonged to the Shorewomen as Kaleigh White and Kelliher organized a 7-2 run to end the half at 37-30 DC.

After a pair of Hollenshead free throws opened up the third period, consecutive triples by Serena Pluta and Meredith sparked a 14-0 rampage to give WC the 44-39 advantage with 3:27 left. Foul shots from both Gabby Smelcer and Hollenshead pulled DC within 47-44 at the 8:37 mark. A layup for Boggs off a feed from Rose sent the home side to the fourth with a 49-44 lead.

Dickinson would get buckets early in the final frame from Victoria Zerbe, Hollenshead and Marion, but were only able to trim two points off the deficit as they trailed 53-50. Three of the next five went the way of the Shorewomen thanks to Pluta and Robinson, before Weinstein and Zerbe tallied six straight to pull the Devils ahead by two (58-56) with 62-ticks left. After two missed foul shots from Robinson, the visitors had a chance to put the game away, but Zerbe missed a jumper allowing Boggs to convert at the other end with seven seconds left to knot the score. Dickinson would have a chance at the winner, unfortunately the offering from Marion missed the mark forcing overtime.

Foul shots from Kelliher, Smelcer and Weinstein had things locked up still at 60-60 with 1:38 off the clock. However, the Shorewomen would seize control of the extra session with a 10-3 run on baskets for Pluta and White to claim a 70-63 advantage with 16-seconds left. Blackman would cap the scoring with a three-pointer just prior to the buzzar to set the 70-66 final.
